Michael Schumacher in critical condition

Thanks, LJ and qayak.

Plus, Schumi is receiving the best possible care.

I recall reading a few times that Grenoble University Hospital, where he's being treated, treats around 1000 patients with head injuries from skiing(?) a year. Did a bit of Googling, and now I can't find a quote.

Would it be in totally bad taste to hope that when (if) Schumacher recovers, the one part of his brain that has been affected is the part that controls charisma.....?

(Just to be clear, I sincerely hope he makes a total recovery - and I'd pray for it if I believed in all that nonsense)

He was funny (not taking himself seriously) in a German TV ad for L'Oreal which I saw a number of years ago when my then-cable TV supplier gave me the DSF German sports channel for a while.

He did that toss of the head with freshly washed hair and said (in German, obviously) "because I'm worth it."

:big: I just had to see that, and found 3 L'Oreal ads he did. Funny stuff! Thanks.

It was reported on TV news that he is not expected to come out of coma. So sad. So sudden.

WTF? What channel? No! :( :( :(

ETA: Google News says this is all speculation based on a Cologne doctor's progosis that he might be a different person when he comes out of the coma.

It was Channel 9, but it looks like it picked up the Daily Mail report. Hope it's wrong.

I can't find anything online.

What I did find, though, were (older) comments that Schumacher was put in an artificial coma -implying that his unconsciousness is intentional.

An expert from Berlin is quoted as saying that it is quite normal to keep the patient in an artificial coma for 3 to 4 weeks, and this form of treatment might indicate that the pressure on Schumacher's brain is still not under control. (He doesn't seem to be involved in the treatment of Schumacher, and there is no date, but the timestamp is from late afternoon, i.e. not today.)

From today, they quote a times article that has an interview with yet another random expert: http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/science/article3976323.ece

No actual news on his condition, at least none I can find.

I'll wait until the doctors treating him make a statement before I believe this. At the moment it sounds like speculation based on rumour.

I con only find vague references in the Twittersphere

I think it is somewhat less-than-solid. An example:

However, the Daily Star reports that a German publication had quoted medical experts who said that Schumacher's condition is so grave that there is a chance he will not awaken, adding that doctors currently have no plans to try to rouse him from his coma.

In other words, this could simply be a case of Mr. A.N Onymous asking Dr Wotsisface what could possibly happen to a man in a coma. Dr Wotsisface need only reel off the list of possibilities with Mr. A.N Onymous deciding to pass on the most dramatic ones.

Yes, I was reading an article on this yesterday as well that mentioned Schumacher. It stated that people with severe TBIs were always different people when they awoke and that some could handle it and some couldn't leading those who couldn't to lives of mental illness and early death.

It pointed out that Schumacher has everything going for him to succeed. Wealth being at the top of the list but fame and so access to great treatment being important as well.

Nothing on his prognosis other than that though.

Reports in the British press today about Schumacher's condition is deteriorating has been dismissed by Schumacher's agent as being pure speculation. Any update will come from the medical team in Grenoble.

Nevertheless, I think it's fair to assume that the hospital would release news of a change in Schumacher's condition - especially if it related to his coming out of (or being brought out of) coma.

And if that's true, then I think it's also fair to say (and most medical experts would say) that 23 days is an unusually long time for a brain-injured person to remain in a coma - induced or otherwise - and subsequently to make a full (or even near-full) recovery. I certainly think that it's justifiable to feel somewhat more pessimistic about the prognosis than it was, say, two weeks ago.

So I think that it's reasonable to at least be thinking in terms of "no news is bad news" in this instance. However, I also think that it's pretty irresponsible of the tabloid press to be splashing these headlines, which after all are currently nothing more than informed conjecture. And I also think that it's still possible that the professionals treating Schumacher are simply exercising extreme caution in keeping him in an induced coma (and that therefore much less should be read into the apparent fact that he is still in a coma

As with so many things though, it is unwise, unreasonable and incorrect to be coming to any conclusions about Schumacher's likely long-term outlook at this point - we need to wait for far more information, and information from the source (i.e. those directly responsible for Schumacher's treatment/care).

We are deeply touched by all the messages to get well soon for Michael which still are being sent. That gives us strength. Thank you all so much! Thank you to the Fanclub in Kerpen, to 1. FC Köln and Schalke 04 but also to everybody else and other fan groups who are supporting Michael. We all know, he is a fighter and will not give up!

Does anyone know how to send a message to his family? I can't see a form or an email address at Schumi's official website.
