Michael Schumacher in critical condition

That's astonishing!

I recently thought about this when I heard about Rik Mayall. He had been in a coma for "several days" and was reported to have been permanently affected by it.

I can only imagine that the time Schumacher was in a coma would mean a much higher level of damage, but quite amazing that he has pulled through at all.

I would advise extreme caution in interpreting this news. Sabine Kehm (unfortunately) has form in misdirection and obfuscation.

I would make the point that it's entirely possible that Schumacher is in a persistent vegetative state. If so, then it would be medically correct to state that he is no longer in a coma (the two conditions are different), and that he is in no immediate danger of loss of life.

Unfortunately I cannot help having the sad feeling that this may well be the true situation, and that anyone envisaging Schumacher in anything like a conscious, aware state may be very wide of the mark. As many medical specialists have said, the known history of Schumacher's injury lends itself to a very bleak outcome. I don't think people should necessarily be getting their hopes up very high :(

German news report that she also said that his ability to communicate was improving. News say he has "woken up", rather than just "no longer is in a coma". Apparently, he has been transferred here for restorative health therapy.

Well I certainly hope that we (the public) can make a positive interpretation of this sort of news. My caution is based upon Kehm's previous statements and comments, and upon the consensus medical view based on the known facts of Schumacher's case (the length of time in a coma, the details of the accident and the aftermath, the known failure to respond).

All that having been said, I of course wish for the fullest possible recovery for Schumacher, so I very much hope my caution is misplaced.

LondonJohn, that's exactly what I was thinking when I heard the news. A vegetative state isn't technically "in a coma". Hopefully that's not the case, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I'm afraid I have similar sentiments. The saying that might apply here is "No News is Bad News" :(

More details appear to be forthcoming.
He's said to be "speaking with his eyes" only (with his reactions being strongest around his wife), and being awake for stretches of time. He is able to breathe alone (somewhere said his breathing was still being supported regardless), he is reacting to touches and voices.

So, no, he certainly doesn't seem to have recovered and his condition is unclear at best.
