Allegedly he was keeping the poor bastard on a tight budget, doling out just enough to pay the assisted living bills.

The charge involving the paraplegic man says Avenatti drained a $4 million settlement paid out to the client by Los Angeles County, using "portions of the settlement to finance his coffee business or pay personal expenses," the U.S. attorney's office statement said.

"Avenatti concealed the receipt of the settlement from Client 1 and instead gave him periodic “advances” of no more than $1,900 and paid the rent for his assisted living facility," the statement said.

It's not cheap having a chronic medical problem or disability in this country, which is why the man was awarded so much money in his lawsuit.

Hard to imagine not getting the book thrown at him in this case, abusing such a vulnerable person is not going to make anyone look favorably on Avenatti.

I never thought he was a hero but I did think he was a persuasive advocate. Who knew that he was a cheat like Trump.

Avenatti talked about running but he didn't have a clue outside of bashing Trump. The few policies he did mention were contrary to Democratic positions. For example, he supported the Republican tax cuts.

Talking about running is not the same things as being the Democratic nominee.

I'm not sure about Cohen. He seemed to think there was some type of mob loyalty until there wasn't.

Mmmm, not entirely, Trump doesn't pay his lawyers, Avenatti doesn't pay his clients, while it might be fitting, probably not the best match.

On Popehat's podcast this week he was just talking off the cuff about possible sentencing in the Stormy Daniels case, which will be tried after this one, and casually referred to a possible sentence for this case as being 20-something years. Precisely because Nike isn't exactly a sympathetic defendant, whereas stealing money from a disabled guy pushes all kinds of buttons.

Listened to the same one, very good coverage which is refreshing.

I suspect it will also be significant that, by all reports, this crime was successful. Seems likely Nike never entertained the extortion attempt and immediately turned around and called up the cops. Avenatti really bit off more than he could chew in that example of criminal activity, and his intended victim didn't really seem that intimidated by him or his petty scheme. In this case, we have a very sympathetic victim who, assuming the allegations are true, suffered very real harm as a result of Avenatti's actions. I'm guessing a judge isn't going to like that an attorney also took advantage of a client like this, given the very specific and serious duties that attorneys owe to their clients.

If Avenatti had been a lawyer for Trump, the GOP would be defending him and claiming he's being persecuted in a witch hunt.
