Yeah, but he wasn't just using the word to hurl an insult at a driver who cut him off.* He was invoking a really horrible and vicious idea (of black men as dangerous thugs wandering around looking for white women to rape) that has been used to commit horrible crimes against black people. There wasn't an actual black person involved that he was mad at -- it's evidence of the fact that that idea is just smoldering inside him. It's violent and gross and disturbed. (All of which, of course, we should expect from his movies.)

I haven't been able to watch any of his movies (including the Lethal Weapon series, which I used to love) since his DWI stop and ensuing rant. What a bloody-minded, foul-mouthed ignorant jerk.

I have also boycotted all MG movies since the traffic stop. What really peaved me about that (being Jewish myself) was the apology. IIRC, he essentially apologized for mistakenly calling the cop a Jew. He never apologized for the hateful things he said about Jews.

To me this is just another incident highlighting the (lack of) character of Mel Gibson.

I don't think it's that uncommon for an abused spouse to tape the abuser as evidence--whether or not such tapes are admissible in court. I have a friend who taped her husband screaming at her just in case she wound up dead by his hand, so that her other family and friends might know what happened to her.

Well... not a terribly successful smear attempt, was it?
In fact, my gf and I don't really argue.. not seriously, and I've never shouted at a woman in my life.
Clearly, Gibson has some temper and character problems, but in this instance it's clear to me that his wife committed the worst acts: i.e. illegally recording a private conversation in order to globally damage the reputation of the father of her child. That child will read all this in years to come, and that fact is the mother's fault.

This also may have a sting in the tail for her. Her actions may well harm Gibson's earning potential, so her future lifestyle of living off him may well be hit.

BTW: Anyone know if there's access to what the mother said during these conversations?

When you're starting to worry that your woman will be raped by roving groups of punctuation, you've been overdoing the scriptwriting.

In any racial discussion, most people defend themselves and what they say by random anecdotes of limited experiences they've had with a particular race. My favorite defense is: I don't hate all black people, just n******. /facepalm!

As a black man I always found that rationale rediculous. I despise stupidity in whatever form it comes in and to label certain blacks as "n******" is childish and weak minded in my eyes. If someones behavior is "low class" call it what it is; classless, ignorance, stupidity, whatever.

Also it seems Mel is concerned with his ex being raped by savage black males but not savage white males. Why the double standard Mel? As a black man I can say i've never known anyone to rove around in packs to hunt down woman to rape. Obnoxiously hit on them? Well that's a different story lol...

So actually being a racist, angry, loopy jerk is not as bad as exposing someone for the jerk he is? I just can't follow that. Imagine the frustration of knowing that someone is that way, and knowing that he's successfully conned a lot of people into thinking he's a decent human being.

If it damages his reputation, it's only bringing his reputation down to the level where it should be. His reputation now more accurately reflects the facts of how he thinks and behaves.

The only doubts I have against her (in this case, aside from the affair-with-a-married-man stuff) is whether she knew he was this way earlier in the relationship, when she was still happy with him. If she was fine with it then, but willing to use it against him now, that makes her look also bad, but not as bad. But who knows -- maybe he was able to put on a happy face for awhile and the raving lunatic didn't come out until they split.

There was a time, you know, when that sort of thing was only common courtesy -- blow me, burn your house down. Now, without a proper male role model like Mel Gibson to show them way, guys are just guessing when it comes to the finer points of spousal etiquette.

Which is why I asked if anyone knew whether what she said in these conversations has been made public.

If it was a simple, impartial leak then you would expect her words to be equally available.

If her words are not available then that strongly suggests - to me, at least, and I would imagine to most rational beings - that it was leaked by herself, or through her representatives, accompanied with an express agreement that only Gibson's contribution to the arguments would be made public.

It's funny (for various reading on the funno-meter) but I posted on another forum about Mel, his "girl friend" and their out of wedlock child before the tape was released.

My point there was, based on an analysis of the dates, that the child was conceived before Mel's divorce. Thus he has violated the Seventh Commandment: Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery; for an acknowledged Christian this seems somewhat disconcerting.
