Mel Gibson 's racist rant

The man educates us about Christ, ancient South American culture, road warriors, and now the intricacies of inter-sex diplomacy.

Is there nothing this man can not do?

I'd say Sainthood can't be far off. Saint Mel, has a nice holy ring to it (Saint Gibson is too stuffy).

Come on. Mel should have known how to answer her question about her looks. He can read women's minds remember? He knows what a girl wants.

Yeah. Let's see, according to the tapes, Mel Gibson is a verbally abusive racist. Her failing, allegedly, is that she exposed Mel Gibson as a verbally abusive racist.

I have a hard time seeing the equivalency.

Why would anyone even want to tape a conversation in the first place?

Oh,I know one reasons: If whoever I'm talking to is fairly likely to spew the stuff we've heard from Gibson here. In that case, I too, would be very likely to tape every conversation.

What, you can threaten to burn down my house and I am expected to still play nice and be discrete?

If I am in a custody dispute with a verbally abusive racist, I certainly would want evidence to give to the court that the person is a verbally abusive racist, considering that those would not be favourable attributes on that person's behalf.

As I recall from the trailer, what he thought women wanted was to see him parading in front of a mirror wearing ladies tights.

Maybe it's what his 'inner' woman wanted?

OMG! Gibson is a self-hating, closet, cross-dressing, gay, black, atheist Jew!

It's like a veil has cleared.

Who hasn't said something amongst the safety of friends that they would never say in public?

Yes, I have said things to friends that I wouldn't say in public. On the other hand, if I were talking to someone on the other side of a lawsuit that involved hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions, and the custody of my child, I would be damned sure not to drop the N-word.

Furthermore some of Mr. Gibson's other racist comments were not said among the safety of freinds but rather were said in public places.

This is a woman who decided to sex it up with a married man that's twice her age just because he's rich and famous.

My missus says he has nice eyes. Well, admittedly she said that about 10 years ago. But she clearly thought he was a bit of awright, as we say around here.

While I fail to understand why disparaging an entire race aided him in any way, towards making a point in a fight, I am just not all that shocked by it. Maybe it's because I grew up among varying degrees of racism from "where do you hide your white hood' to 'making excuses for people who happen to be black because you are so afraid of being called a racist.'

People, even celebs, are not perfect and capable of suffering from ignorance. I've known plenty of otherwise intelligent people who suffer from the misconception that being rude is somehow worse if the rude person happens to be black; or here in Florida, being Mexican seems to be even worse of a crime.

Driving in traffic and someone cuts you off:
If they are white, they are just rude (or not paying attention). If they are black, they are self-entitled and think they are excempt from manners. If they are Mexican, they are here illegally and a danger to everyone on the road. If they are Asian, they just can't drive.

So someone says this without looking over his proverbial shoulder and it makes news. Being able to parrot one-liners does not make me hold Mel to any higher standard than anyone else. I don't know him personally so it can't possibly change my opinion of him. Hearing it come from someone else does make it sound worse and hopefully, people who read this kind of news might make some kind of comparison to how they might sound but it's not likely. In any racial discussion, most people defend themselves and what they say by random anecdotes of limited experiences they've had with a particular race. My favorite defense is: I don't hate all black people, just n******. /facepalm!

Of that nature and magnitude? Not me.

Is there an acceptable level of ignorance? I seem to remember a thread full of Helen Keller jokes. I don't know if you actually partook so I am not directing this at you, personally; cruel jokes about a severely disabled person = funny but racial slurs = unacceptable.

The N-word is the last of the sacred cows.

Depends on what you mean. Several years ago, I quit a job because the only other person in my department was racist, hate-filled, homophobic, stupid and lazy. She crossed my personal ALI (acceptable level of ignorance).

Mel Gibson's rant doesn't offend me any more than anyone else saying the same thing and I'm more offended by the misogyny of it than the racism.

If you don't want something to bite you in the rear, don't say it. And certainly don't say it to someone who is angry with you.

Sure i make a few jokes that i wouldn't want repeated, but if someone tape recorded them and repeated them i could not then blame them. I said the joke.

If you are embarrassed at what your saying, maybe, just maybe you should rethink what you say and not blame people for being able to prove you said it.

I guess I can agree; there are people I stopped hanging out with because I could get a more intellectual conversation going with a head of cabbage.

This is not in Mel's defense but in most people's defense. There are certain "truths" that we grow up with and don't question till we are out of our parent/guardian's direct influence. My grandfather, though on all other fronts appeared to be the smartest man alive, was a racists. Sometimes, when our judgement is clouded; elevated emotions, alcohol, or a combination of both, we go on attack mode and revert to old ways of thinking, in the same way we would when we see a good opportunity for a stereotypical joke. In this case, he seems to be suffering from two misconceptions; A) no one can ever 'ask for it' and B) being raped by any particular racial group does not make the rape worse.

Yeah, but he wasn't just using the word to hurl an insult at a driver who cut him off.* He was invoking a really horrible and vicious idea (of black men as dangerous thugs wandering around looking for white women to rape) that has been used to commit horrible crimes against black people. There wasn't an actual black person involved that he was mad at -- it's evidence of the fact that that idea is just smoldering inside him. It's violent and gross and disturbed. (All of which, of course, we should expect from his movies.)

*Not that I'm excusing that either.

Fair enough. Me? I'd tolerate a racist, multi-millionaire dad.

And FWIW, leaking a taped private conversation is pretty low.

Hold on a minute. If the tape is being used in court, it isn't illegal. is it.

Conversations are often recorded just for this purpose. Where I live, as long as one person in the conversation is aware it is being recorded, the recording can be used in court. I am not sure what the law specifically says in California but the courts have accepted the tape.

The recording of the tapes isn't immoral, either. How else does one prove that someone is lying in court. Gibson is an actor. He can play any role he needs to to make things look good for him in court. However, that isn't what he is really like, is it? Without those recordings the courts would not be able to make an informed decision about his true behaviour. It isn't immoral for Gibson to lie but it is for someone to prove he is lying?

On the other hand, no one has considered that Gibson or his team of lawyers are the real leak of the tapes. They could do it specifically to get the tapes removed from the trial. The judge could rule they are too inflammatory because of the public reaction and not allow them to be used. All speculation of course.

I just hope Gibson is held accountable for being the jerk he is. He danced through the minefield last time he went off like a Roman Candle, hopefully, he gets nailed to the cross on this one.

Evidence?

Okay, it's possible she was messing around with a married man because he was charming or something but she was still messing around with a married man.

Mel Gibson's 80?!* (must have the constitution of an Old Testament patriarch, package deal with the mentality).

Well the pics I saw of her awhile back seemed to indicate she was younger than that.

My bad. :o

This is a custody case, ruled by a judge, and not a jury trial, right?

If so, wouldn't such a ruling be an admission by the judge that he isn't unbiased and is subject to make a decision based on public opinion? If I am the lawyers for Gibson, I want him off the case immediately.

Saint Gibby... patron saint of drunken, antisemitic rants and poorly-worded fashion tips.

Of course, he'll need proof of, what is it, three miracles? First one's staring him in the face: ever getting a movie made in Hollywood again.

Well, I think he was producer for both The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto, so as long as he can continue to talk himself into approving his own work, he's probably okay.

I haven't been able to watch any of his movies (including the Lethal Weapon series, which I used to love) since his DWI stop and ensuing rant. What a bloody-minded, foul-mouthed ignorant jerk.

"raped by a pack of *******"

Man if I had a dollar for every time I yelled that at someone driving too slow in the left hand lane.

Although admittedly how a pack of lasagna would be able to commit rape is beyond me. v
