When the Republicans choose their candidate on September 4th, there is a very real chance that they could throw the election into an unexpected chaos as they pull a genuine September Surprise.

I think there is every reason to believe John McCain won't be the nominee. Ok, let me say that again. McCain will not be the Republican candidate in November.

And look at the top 5 names to replace McCain. The author claims one of the main reasons he should drop out is because of his endorsement from Bush. He then says that Powell and Rice are the top two replacement choices.

4 and 5 are Romney and Huckabee, two guys that dropped out long ago, because they couldn't get enough party support, the other reason the author thinks McCain should drop out.

If the candidate isn't actually chosen until the convention, is this the sort of wild circumstance Hillary might be banking on?

There are two ways this could go. One could agree with the O.P. and say that the fresh face would be in the news so often that they would have a fighting chance. OTOH, one could disagree and say that Obama will have finally made himself a known quantity and the newcomer would have an uphill battle.

Seriously, that is the most fatheaded bit of political analysis I have seen in a long time. Barack Obama has a better chance of not being the Democratic nominee than McCain does of not being the Republican.

It's a pretty transparent tactic; just last week I heard conservative talk radio (Neal Boortz) say that rumors were that Democrats were going to try to switch candidates at the convention, because they've got "buyer's remorse" over Obama, a hopelessly flawed candidate who can't possibly win, and that they worry there is all sorts of dirt out there on him yet to surface etc.

It's just a smear tactic.

That's a very stupid article. The only way McCain is not the nominee is if he dies or has a serious health problem. It will not be because of second thoughts about his electability. He is the only remotely electable Republican in the Universe right now.

ETA: Back when Romney and Huckabee were still in the race they did some head-to-head polls, and neither did nearly as well as McCain
