Matt Gaetz reported to be leaving the House

I think it's inevitable that the report will be leaked. It's not as if it's a Top Secret document or anything. (As if that would matter.)
Oh I have zero doubt it will still get out. I have even less doubt that I would contain anything we didn't already know.

But it not being "officially" released is exactly the kind of "out" those "I'm totally not a Trumper, don't you dare call me a Trumper, now if you'll excuse me my mouth has been on Trump's you know what for 10 whole seconds, let me get back to that" Trumpers in Congress will use to pretend like it doesn't count so they can do the whole "Well I don't want to confirm Gaetz but there's nothing official so my hands are tied LOL watcha gonna do" routine.

Trump will just have to get in the habit of pardoning all his cabinet picks.

SCOTUS will just say that the "The President Can Do Whatever He Wants as long as it's Trump" ruling extends to his cabinet. Then to his family. Then to anyone Trump says so.

IMO, this really is a win-win for Trump. He could not care less about Gaetz; all these people are just pawns to him, as he is flexing his power. If Gaetz does get approved, well and good, a victory, and it shows you get rewarded for loyalty to Trump. If Gaetz does not get approved, Trump goes off on one of his unhinged rants and blames everyone, especially those RINOs not loyal to him.

It also allows him to indulge in one of his favorite pastimes: watch others be humiliated. He is both mean and cruel, and enjoys watching others taken down or otherwise be embarrassed. He recently did that to Musk, effectively calling him a lapdog. There are countless other instances. If Gaetz isn't good enough he'll be tossed to the wayside and another will take his place.

Speaker Johnson strongly recommends against making the report public doing Trmp's bidding.
Not that it matters, the report is going to get leaked anyway.
But shows Johnson will do whatever Trump says.

Was Johnson's craven loyalty ever in doubt ?

If the report is leaked then presumably the GOP can use that as a reason to ignore it and confirm Gaetz.

And this republican freely admits, no can't say admits he boasts that when Trump says jump they have to jump. And this is no exaggeration:

From the transcript:

uestion he's the leader of our party so

now he's got a mission statement his
4:43
mission and his goals and objectives
4:45
whatever that is we need to embrace it
4:48
all of it every single word in his
4:52
mission statement we need to embrace if
4:54
Donald Trump says jump 3 ft high and
4:56
scratch your head we all jump 3 ft high
4:59
and scratch heads

Couldn't be clearer.

Not his loyalty, but his willingness to follow through. Haven't there been at least one or two instances where he balked when it came to a showdown?

Appropriate that he uses "jump" as Trump's instruction that they would follow, because his leadership involves asking people to do things that he wouldn't or couldn't

I disagree, I think he has an excellent chance of being appointed. I'd be very surprised if any Republican senators are willing to actually vote against his appointment. Sure, they may be willing to grumble off the record but they cannot afford to draw the ire of Trump and the MAGA crowd and find themselves being primaried.

This of course assumes that Trump doesn't make any contentious appointments during a period of senate recess.

I'm not so sure that Trump will go the recess appointment route. I think he wants a clear victory and to humiliate any people briefing against him so he'll bring Gaetz to the Senate and dare the senators to defy his will.

Why do you imagine that there aren't four Republican senators who are planning to retire? Chuck Grassley is 92 years old; Mitch McConnell and Jim Risch are both in their 80s. And Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski both voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial. Exactly how are they going to be in any more trouble with him and his supporters if they vote against Gaetz?

Further, mounting a primary challenge to an incumbent senator is generally far more difficult than challenging an incumbent representative, especially in a larger state. Far more money is required, and the challenger will have to persuade many more voters than if he or she were attempting to unseat an incumbent representative.

Finally, Trump failed spectacularly in his attempt to oust Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger after they refused to go along with his stolen-election lies, so he's already proven that he's not as scary as he wants people to think he is, and he may not want to make additional empty threats trying to get Gaetz confirmed.

Yes but they need both the backbone to stand up to Trump and the desire to do something I'm not sure Mitch McConnell, for example thinks the damage to the US from Trump is too high a price to pay for getting the GOP onto the leavers if power

Failing to confirm Gaetz (and RFK Jr, and Gabbard) isn't going to stop the Republicans from having power. It's just going to force Trump to pick (at least halfway) reasonable nominees. You may be unaware of this, but Republican-controlled Senates have in the recent past declined to confirm nominees of Republican presidents (including Trump 45), although the nominee is generally withdrawn in order to avoid the embarrassment of being voted down.

But tha was when Trump had some pretence of trying to have adults in the room.

Trump's brain seems to have degenerated to the stage that he now thinks that whatever he says goes without brooking any refusal. So if he says Gaetz is the AG, and RFK Jr is Health, and Gabbard is National Security, then that's it. Trump has spoken and pointed his pudgy finger. The Senate can go hang itself...he'll fire them if they don't comply.

We have yet to see whether he's wrong, though.

I think its unlikely that Gaetz will be convicted of anything.

Years ago, when one of Gaetz' friends struck a plea deal, the guy's lawyer made some big deal about how "Gaetz should be feeling uncomfortable". But it seems like any sort of prosecution of Gaetz has (sadly) died.

(Not sure exactly why the prosecution didn't go forward with a case, but I suspect that the main witness, the woman he was allegedly involved with at 17, was considered a "bad witness", since she would likely consider herself "not a victim")
Gaetz is the son of one of the biggest party bosses in Florida. My guess is the prosecution was told to slowwalk the case until all the evidence was lost and witnesses/victims given the big sleep.
