"Mass casualties" at crash at Nevada airshow

P-51 Mustang.

A 'car race' in the sky? Didn't know they even had those?

75-plus injured, some critically.

80 year old pilot.
WAY off the race course...

If you observe carefully, the race course is off to the right of the crowd.
This plane comes down from the left... how'd it get there?
At the '71 Reno race, I watched Howie Keefe in his P-51 blow the motor in the race. He pulled up out of everyone's way, and landed safely, with the entire front end of his P-51 covered with oil.

80 year old men should not be flying planes, much less a p-51 traveling at 400 mph in a tight circle. They wouldn't let a 80 yo man drive in a nascar race where no one in the crowd could even get hurt.

If you watch the videos, it appears he went straight in to the runway-not the crowd. The reports of 2 on the ground killed and 75 injured (9 critical) lends credence to that fact--if he'd gone into the stands, as first reported, the death toll would be much, much higher.
Debris scatter would account for the relatively few casualties.
Overreacting is a standard, here--especially from people who don't know ****. Wait for the data, folks!

The reports are all that the plane went into the box seats, not the runway, rwguinn.

The fact there was no fireball, it was a small plane and there was a lot of on scene medical support could account for a low death toll.

And observers are reporting the plane wobbled as one would with mechanical difficulties, so it's premature to blame the guy's age. As long as he passed a sufficient medical exam, there are healthy 80 yr olds out there.

I had the idea to turn on automatic updates on youtube comments. Terrible idea.

This is quite a sad story.

You've obviously never been close to a P-51.
Let's wait for data, folks.

ETA==from my link, above
The aircraft is seen descending in a near vertical attitude and the accident was not remotely survivable. The impact area is said to be next to an area containing a number of 'Box Seats' and the debris path is obviously widely scattered. Local TV states that the impact was close to, but NOT in the occupied bleachers and seats.
So if you are conjecturing, just <SNIP>, m'kay?
