Marilyn Monroe For Senate

Just imagine the reaction around here if some conservative expressed the hope that Obama keeled over from a heart attack.

From the irrational hatred I see of Obama by many conservatives I would think "heart attack" is a bit too natural a death for them.

A recording has emerged in which the McConnell camp discusses Judd and various tactics to use against her, should she run. The recording is apparently authentic, because the McConnell campaign has asked the FBI and the US Attorney's office in Louisville to investigate where the recording came from. Apparently the McConnell folks have felt that the recording must have come from wiretapping, which they view as a serious invasion of privacy (if it happens to them).

This is just a guess, but there probably ain't no actual wiretapping or secret high-tech surveillance involved. Portable phones can record things, and lots of people carry them, including people on McConnell's own team.

I just saw this. Those talking to Judd about running probably did their on opposition research and probably came up with the same stuff and led her to not want to run.

I'll bet there is someone in McConnell's office who is about to resign.

You know, I don't think that there was anything in that recording that was really, really awful. Candidates HAVE TO assess the potential strengths and weak spots of their opponents, including whether to push an issue that might be delicate or out of bounds.

I found it interesting that discussions of Judd's mental health played a role, since that reminded me of a short story I wrote, in which a candidate's mental health was made into a campaign issue.

It's not that it is awful in and of itself, it's that it can so easily be sound-bited into devastatingly effective ads.

Example: John Kerry wind surfing. Actually that's pretty impressive, it's not that easy to do. Shows he's athletic and strong. But the Bush campaign made a very effective ad out of it about Kerry shifting in the winds.

She comes off as a bit of a ditz here:

I call it the American anesthesia. You know, I come back to this country. I freak out in airports. The colors, the sounds, all those different ways of packaging the same snack but trying to, you know, make it look like it's distinct and different and convince consumers that they have to have it. I mean all of that. The last time I came home from a trip, I absolutely flipped out when I saw pink fuzzy socks on a rack. I mean, I can never anticipate what is going to push me over the edge.

Oh noes! Pink fuzzy socks!
