Magnets used to cure depression

Mouthfire,

this is an excellent example of the overwhelming negativity that goes on at this forum. I need to point it out so that people can learn from it and hopefully not repeat it. we need skeptics here NOT pseudoskeptics. you'll thank me later for doing this.

I also need to point out that this study was immediately labeled WOO". this is wrong and needs to be pointed out.

That isn't negativity. I don't know why you feel asking questions and trying to figure out how something works is "negative". I guess that's why you rarely learn anythign new.

The magnets themselves have no effect on the brain. The current they generate might. Do you not understand this?

What is your definition of a pseudoskeptic?

Eos you are clearly wrong on this issue. Listen to Btox. quit going on and on about something that you clearly are clueless on.

dense? the magnets are capable of inducing seizures. what is it that you do not understand about this?

I'm wrong to ask how this happens? I got my questions answered by asking them. Clueless? It's clueless to ask for how something works?

You call me clueless when you are the one who will state magnets are capable of inducing seizures? Why do you leave out the part about the electricity? I think you need to learn more about causes, effects and including all of the information.

Hmmmmm.

As for conductivity, I would speculate that the ions in the solution are the cause of conductivity. It takes a bit of highly specfic energy to knock an electron completely off of a molecule, and even if you did, you would only form peroxides, which, by all accounts, are bad things to have running amuck in your body. (this is how Gamma radiation causes cancer..;) )

Your brain, however, is surrounded by fluid, in which is dissolved a plethora of ions. If, for no other reason, to regulate the pH of the system. Yes, I see where this could create heat, I suppose. (Ok, Ok..not 'create' but you know what I mean.) However, I think that the current generated is the point of it. Of course, we can only speculate, here.

On the other hand, mucking about with our internal 'computer' seems like a bad idea until we figure out what's going on.

Oh, and Olaf...being an arse gets you very little. I have disagreed with a few folks around here, and never had to resort to name-calling. The tone of your posts could be one of the reasons you aren't taken more seriously. Look at Zaaydragon. He's an admitted Wiccan. Even true believer Christians might shout 'WOO' at him.(admittedly not all...but there are those who would..) Yet he is respected on this forum, for the main part. Why do you think this is? Because he treats others with respect.

Just a thought, take it for what it's worth.

Well, magnets certainly cheer me up. Just looking at the catalogue
here http://www.neodymium-magnets-uk.com/
brings a silly grin to my face. (Big kid).

I like their stance on magnetic therapy too- "we don't actually think it works, but if you want to buy magnets, we sell 'em."

I believe there is evidence of magnetite occuring naturally in animal and bird brains. (Including homing pigeons!) I don't know about humans.
