"Lake America"

View from Oz. We get shown both, although the name "Lake Ontario" is shown in the same script format as all the other Great Lakes. Oh, and "Lake America" is described as the smallest of them...which I suspect is an unsubtle jab at Donny's "greatest ever!" memes.

Canada should rerun that anti-tariff Reagan ad that seriously pissed off Trump. Air it during the RNC midterm convention coverage. Over and over.

What the Ronald Reagan ad that got Trump so angry was really all about
President Donald Trump has canceled trade negotiations with Canada over what he called a “fake” ad that featured parts of an anti-tariff speech delivered by conservative hero and former President Ronald Reagan. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute also said the ad misrepresented the former president’s words.

It wasn’t fake. It was edited. But Reagan really did spend a five-minute speech — an April 25, 1987, national radio address that the Reagan Library has published on YouTube — railing against tariffs. It was a full-throated expression of support for free and fair trade.

More of his banana republic BS. I've generally rolled my eyes at various lefty friends being embarrassed by the likes of GW and what not but, Trump is embarrassing. Lots genuinely sinister and shameful stuff too, but maybe more of the just embarrassingly acting like a parody of a third world dictator.

It would be better if it were just nonsense like this, but it would still make him unfit for office, any office really.

Over the past week my interactions with american business contacts has been interesting. From the more serious-minded people, anything ranging from saying how embarrassing this all is to outright apologies.

From the more maga crowd, its been all business. They're not eager to discuss their hero at the moment. This tariff nonsense in indefensible. Not from an economic standpoint, not from any standpoint. Just needless upheaval for thousands of ordinary people.

It used to look like everything trump did was in service of lining his own pockets but I don't even know about that any more. He's routinely doing things that hurt both himself and the country. He long ago ceased to be a rational actor. Its well past 25th amendment time.

Indeed. Gramps is falling asleep, mumbling incoherencies, mired in a war that his idiot secretary of rum can't seem to prosecute effectively, and is clearly doing his worst to cheat the living ◊◊◊◊ out of the mid-terms, which he must win if he hopes not to be impeached. He is the poster-child for invoking the 25th, but can you imagine anyone in his cabinet with balls enough to even float the idea? And even if they sent the declaration to this spineless, useless congress, the square-looking wimp of a speaker would have nothing to do with it.

◊◊◊◊, I just pissed myself off again.

That's what I've been doing with my colleagues, vendors, and customers. Luckily we've known each other for long enough that they realize I'm mostly powerless and suffering too. Hats off to them for continuing to engage in a spirit of cooperation.

Donald Trump lined his own pockets by bullying and stiffing other people. Along the way he seems to have developed a taste for the bullying and stiffing irrespective of any specific goal. He just likes to hurt people to show he's boss.

It's well past 25th amendment time.
Quite past. However, as with all other things pertaining to American government, the 25th Amendment requires some operatives in government who are more committed to the norms of government and to their individual oaths of office than they are to the party or the President.

The so-called Unitary Executive theory is being aggressively championed by Chief Justice Roberts and his allies on the high court. This is at odds with the original meaning of the Advice and Consent Clause, which unambiguously denies the President sole power to shape his administration. The original plan was for any eventual whims of the President to be tempered by advisors and assistants who first had to pass Senate muster, and who could eventually be relied upon to act independently with authority to reign in a wayward President.

Obviously the current Cabinet and Congress has no intention of crossing Donald Trump. That seems like pure authoritarianism to me. It stars with choosing a sensible President, which the Electoral College was meant to safeguard. That too has been erased. Instead of ensuring that a good person gets put into high office, the Electoral College merely skews the results so that the office can be attained with a minority of the vote.

I can't argue with anything you've said. Its a grim outlook to be sure.

I am not am american and not steeped in your political system but from the outside looking in, its hard not to get the feeling that the american experiment is over. Most of the political class is busy fleecing every cent they can out of their positions and have long ago given up on the idea of good governance. Electing a more qualified president would be a start but after 4 years of institutional and reputational destruction under trump and his ridiculously unqualified cabinet, will there be anything left to save?

I yearn for the relative political stability of 20 years ago but am increasingly coming to the conclusion that whatever comes next, it won't resemble that. I am curious, as a thinking person, do you see a way back for the USA?

Treaty of Canandaigua.

The problem is that Trump thinks George Washington is just some dead bitch that he can use in stupid AI images to prop up his own filthy reputation.

Come one why should we start honoring treaties now? Honoring treaties with natives is down right unamerican. Like honoring treaties with muslims.

If dealing with me in real life, you'd think I was MAGA. I wouldn't talk much about trump or how embarrassing he is either.

The trump cabinet has taken to mocking Canada's military now that changing the name of a lake failed to elicit any reaction.

Brain donor Sean Duffy said "Canada has no military"

Smiling imbecile Scott Bessant followed up with "What are they going to do, take their two submarines from the Edmonton mall and sic them on us?"

Now Secretary of Murder Pete Hegseth has taken it to the next level, posting a picture of 2 young female Canadian cadets in uniform and mocking their appearance. The cadet program is for ages 12-18 so he is publicly mocking teen girls. Naturally these 2 are now at the receiving and of an online storm of hate.

I know there is no bottom with these people but they still routinely find new ways to turn the stomach of any sane person.

Its been a real reversal. Usually its the magas who can't shut up about dei this and trans that and somehow seem to think foreigners are completely unaware of their politics.

Now its the more normal folks who were usually quiet but suddenly feel the need to stand up and say "This is not who we are!" I think many are just too embarrassed to stay silent. I have heard it over and over the past few weeks.
