You all will have to forgive me here, but my knowledge of the UCMJ is limited to what I learned from JAG (a show only slightly more reality based than Shrek).
Young Mr. Rowe has deserted in a time of war. He can face the firing squad for this, can't he?

I think desertion in peacetime is very bad.
Desertion during wartime, declared or not is very very bad. But still death penalties are unlikely.
Desertion in the face of the enemy is real bad. Even so, only Slovik has ever been executed in the US Army and that was back in 1945. I seriously doubt that Rowe's desertion, which is more of a 'failure to appear for duty' than anything else, is going to even come close to that.
