When I turned on the TV this morning, I heard the BBC saying that the funeral date of Kim Jong Il had been announced.

I know I might be setting myself up for allegations of being slow, but -- honestly -- I would not have asked this regaring anyone else. I asked: "Is he dead, then?"

I think you are probably correct in some cases. I recall reading that some people in the former soviet union sincerely wept when Stalin died, and still hold him dear to this day.

It seems odd, but people some people really want to love their leaders, I think.

It's pretty damned certain that he's dead. I trust the North Koreans on that score, in the sense that I don't see any reason for them to announce his death if it wasn't true. But I don't trust them to be honest about how or even when he died.

I don't think it seems odd. There are people who think the U.S. has never committed any morally reprehensible acts or are willing to overlook them in their emotional reverence to some heroes/leaders. I suspect patriotism is very similar to religion in its neurological underpinnings--at least emotionally.

I saw a report earlier today, I think it was on Al-Jazeera, where the reporter referred to it as "more cult than country."

Generaly invading a nuclear power with the ability to flatturn at least one city you like is considered unwise. In any case we have no real objection to north korea per se. Just the ruling group.
