North Korean authorities are punishing mourners who failed to exhibit sincere sadness and despair after the death of Kim Jong Il on Dec. 17, the Daily NK reported Wednesday.
The online North Korean newspaper, which is published by opponents of the governing regime, said a source in North Hamkyung Province revealed the information. The source told the paper “authorities are handing down at least six months in a labor-training camp to anybody who didn’t participate in the organized gatherings during the mourning period, or who did participate but didn’t cry and didn’t seem genuine,” according to the Daily NK.

But, you can't really blame the government. Look at what disrespect some of the citizens showed:

“Patients who remained in hospitals ... were all singled out for punishment.”

What, you can't drag yourself out of hospital to put on a false display of grief? Surely you deserve prison!

North Korean army minister 'executed with mortar round'

Kim Chol, vice minister of the army, was taken into custody earlier this year on the orders of Kim Jong-un, who assumed the leadership after the death of his father in December.

On the orders of Kim Jong-un to leave "no trace of him behind, down to his hair," according to South Korean media, Kim Chol was forced to stand on a spot that had been zeroed in for a mortar round and "obliterated."

The execution of Kim Chol is just one example of a purge of members of the North Korean military or party who threatened the fledgling regime of Kim Jong-un.

So far this year, 14 senior officials have fallen victim to the purges, according to intelligence data provided to Yoon Sang-hyun, a member of the South Korean Foreign Affairs, Trade and Unification Committee.

Those that have fallen from favour include Ri Yong-ho, the head of the army and Ri Kwang-gon, the governor of the North Korean central bank.

I also doubt that he really was killed in that way as it seems awfully inefficient to me. Why not strap high explosives to him? or better yet, a bullet in the brain and cremation of the remains.

I wonder if the jong-un is perhaps purging some of the hardliners? If the executed vice minister really had been killed because he hadn't shown sufficient reverence for the passing of the old dictator this could have been viewed as a challenge to the jong-un and might be the reason for his death.

You have to remember that a regime like North Korea is motivated by unbridled paranoia. Just being popular and bright enough to organize a coup is reason enough for such a regime to purge an insider.
