Kid gets suspended after standing up to bully

Not really. I've done my fair share of bullying, and vice versa - none of what I did or had done to me would warrant a body slam that could potentially cripple me/them.

It would certainly be warranted if you punched someone in the face.

If you physically attack someone, you deserve what you get. If you pick on someone bigger than you - you're so stupid you really deserve what you get, which should be a Darwin Award.

That little kid will never touch that big kid again. Ever. And if his knee is all screwed up now, so much the better. Let him learn now that actions have consequences.

If a bully physically attacks someone, then he should know that his life is up for grabs. Simple as that.

And I hope the big kid's parents sue the little kid's parents and the school.

Oh, and shame on you for being a bully.

I don't see the need to draw any line on retaliation, unless it turns out this kid was a black belt who knew exactly how much force to use to incapacitate someone with minimal risk of long term harm. It seems reasonable to me to conclude that this kid is not Mr Miyagi (Pat Morita, not Jackie Chan) and reacted with what he had to the situation. Sucks for the bully that what his target had was more height and about twice his body weight.

I'm not sure even retaliation is the right word, to be honest. This kid wasn't looking for revenge or having thoughts about paying someone back in kind. I doubt he was thinking much at all, but simply did what he could to stop someone punching him in the face. And frankly, he reacted with a lot more calm than I suspect most people would have. How many punches did he block or ignore before grabbing the little bastard? The bully had plenty of oppurtunities to walk away and decided instead to keep hitting someone twice his size. If he'd been killed or crippled for life, I'd just call that evolution in action.

Punches to the face/head can potentially cripple kill people as well. I think the kid coped rather well given the situation.

Fixed it.

It has happened over here, also at school. Two kids going at each other. One unlucky placed and received punch and one of them was left dead.

Regarding the big guy, I can totally understand, even though his reaction could have killed the little one. He acted out of emotion, not rationally, where the small boy did.

We don't know what has happened before, if anything at all. Did they small boy pick on the big boy for a long time (say weeks), or was this their first encounter?

It wasn't a fair fight from the beginning, as you seem to be pointing out. The bully is obviously smaller than the victim, and it looked as if the big kid shrugged off his punches. What he was doing was taking out frustration on the kid by smashing him to the ground (nothing a slap around wouldn't have fixed) - he wasn't in physical danger or seemingly badly hurt.

That little kid will never touch that big kid again. Ever. And if his knee is all screwed up now, so much the better. Let him learn now that actions have consequences.

I know it's silly to compare, but what if the victim had simply attempted to kill the kid? Apparently any repercussion on the bully is fine as long as he learns his lesson.

I won't bother pointing out how silly that makes you look.

And I hope the big kid's parents sue the little kid's parents and the school.

Ditto.

It doesn't take a black-belt to know that slamming someone down onto their back on concrete is potentially dangerous.

It seems reasonable to me to conclude that this kid is not Mr Miyagi (Pat Morita, not Jackie Chan) and reacted with what he had to the situation.

Erm, what? The victim wasn't a pro-wrestler who could only defend himself by body slamming his attackers. He was HUGE compared to that other kid. There are any number of things he could have done to control the situation.

The bully had plenty of oppurtunities to walk away and decided instead to keep hitting someone twice his size.

To be honest, so did the victim. I'm in no way implying that he should have dealt with being bullied, but I was raised to avoid physical confrontation at all costs.

If he'd been killed or crippled for life, I'd just call that evolution in action.

What it would be is manslaughter.

I seriously don't see the problem with what the kid did here.

He was attacked - massively and repeatedly and the attacker apparently had friends standing by, too.

Yay for him, tough **** for the bully. That was self-defense as clear as it gets, and if the little creep ends up crippled or dead: Too bad. Should have been less of a stupid jerk.

What exactly should we expect of the big kid? Just wait and take more punches to the face? Hope that somebody eventually decides its time to intervene? Hope that the bully's friends don't join in on the fun? Hope that the bully doesn't start using some kind of weapon?

I don't think that's the norm.

IANAL, but hardly. Self-defense.

Again, what do you reasonably expect after you just got hit in the face? A rational analysis of the options at your disposal? Should he have phoned a friend fore advice first or what?

Look at the first punch he received and how he swings back and then tell me again that he wasn't injured or hurt or simply too stunned to react to the next couple of punches.

Tell me why he could have been certain that walking away wouldn't have resulted in an ambush from behind?

Can you really say massively? Repeatedly, yes, but that's the only thing you have going for your argument, and it's paper-thin considering the disparity in WEIGHT between the two. You've seen people here saying the bully got what he deserved for attacking someone much bigger than him - well why does it matter if apparently the kid's weight has nothing to do with how he takes the punches?

That was self-defense as clear as it gets, and if the little creep ends up crippled or dead: Too bad. Should have been less of a stupid jerk.

Self-defense can also get out of hand.

What exactly should we expect of the big kid?

To be aware of his weight and to know how and when to use it when potentially fighting a kid much smaller than himself?

I actually saw something similar. Two drunken idiots after the bars let out. Exchanged words, strode towards each other, and a single punch knocked one of them out. He fell back and cracked his head on the pavement.

From what I gathered from the newspapers later, he had internal bleeding. He did live, but it could have gone either way. From one punch.

Kudos to the real people here who recognise that it is in the bullied boy's rights to retaliate with sufficient or even excessive force, as he deems fit, to end the situation permanently. Bullies have no right to expect clemency from their targets. Bullies are terrorists and deserve whatever they get.

Negative kudos to all the morons who are defending the bully's right to bully, by blaming the victim or suggesting that he should have done something different. Maybe he did the only thing he could think of. I don't see any of you flying in with your supercape to defend the fat kid, so, blow it out your ear.

Bully for the fat kid!

It'd take a stone-cold jury to not see the difference in weight between the two kids, and that the victim was perhaps being a bit excessive in body-slamming the bully.

Well you just said it - a time to cool off before flying off. Apparently you think I'm against self-defense? Well I'm not, as I've said. I don't think he needed a potentially crippling body-slam as much as a good slap around, which the bigger kid proved he could do no problem.

Punched to the side of the head, if not the upper cheek bone - probably hurt the bully more than the victim. If he had been punched in the nose, I may agree with you.

No guarantees. What's to stop this 'gang' (term used very lightly) from continuing the bullying? They found it funny that their friend got hurt. They're either cowards or loons, possibly both, so like I said there are no guarantees with the friends.

The reason wrestling is called fake is because moves like that one are too dangerous and likely to cause permanent damage when they're not choreographed.

But that kid deserved it. :-\

I'd say they both need punished, but differently. The bully because he just walked up to and punched him in the face. The victim because he should be taught more proper ways to defend himself. And then the school because I'm certain they ignored previous complaints about that kid being a bully.
I tend to go with: the best defense against bullies is the sure knowledge that they are soeday going to attack a smaller target, the smaller target is going to go berserker and wipe the floor with the bully - usually in one fell stroke. I am completely in favor of this.

With the utmost sympathy for people who believe the bully needs help and consideration, I don't - until afterwards when they are pale, firightened and in pain because of their own stupidity.

You can see the little kid smiling as he starts jabbing the big kid in the side and gut after he already hit him in the face. The big kid seemed to be smirking a bit too, either he wasn't sure what to do, or they knew each other. I think the peer pressure of being watched and recorded had given both of them a sense to perform. I feel for the big kid, and would have probably done the same thing, but outside the heat of the moment I can see it's a bit excessive. I don't think the kid should be punished for it, but he should be given a good talking to over the situation.

:dl:

It was the pavement that almost killed him, not the punch.

How do you figure the kid went overboard?

Well, could've done some serious damage to the little kid. He may have "deserved it" and I have no problem with the big guy defending himself. But if he'd smashed his head open on the concrete it would've been an incident I'm sure everyone would've regretted.

Right, but we are of course talking about children that need to learn how to deal with such situations, not be encouraged to fly off the handle and potentially cripple others.
