This is all over the news, so I won't bother to post a source, but you've probably heard the story:

Kerry, asked about his enviormental record, said that he never owned a SUV. A reporter asked him to explain, in that case, the picture of a gas-guzzling monstrosity parked in his driveway. Kerry's answer? Well, it isn't really HIS SUV, but HIS FAMILY'S (that is, his wife's, the Heinz company heiress--together with the house itself, the grounds it is built on, etc.), so, technically, he is innocent of the "crime" of ownership.

It is this sort of thing that hurts Kerry. Say he owned an SUV and "hypocritically" still claimed to be an enviormentalist. So? Big deal! Being hypocritical about the enviorment is very common, and besides whether he's an enviormentalist or not depends more on his voting record than his wheels. But to first deny you own an SUV, and then hide behind the "it's my wife's" excuse?

The sole result of such apologetics is that many people who couldn't care less if Kerry owns a whole fleet of SUVs and keeps them all with motor running 24/7, figure that he is the type of guy who resorts to "It's my wife's"-type excuses that someone like that shouldn't be president.

Which is why Bush's numbers, after a horrible period where everyhting seems to go wrong, are steady, and Kerry didn't gain any support.

Well is it registered under his name?? Is it an American SUV at least.??

What bugs me is seeing all these govt SUVs. Why do they need SUVS? They cost a hell of alot. couldnt they buy vans ifthey need the room.

Next the hypocrite will be claiming that he doesn't own a sewing machine, high heels, makeup, and a diaphragm.

Skeptic:

I agree that this is bad politics by Kerry. Sheesh, just admit it is your SUV and move on.

If Kerry had a Toyota Prius, which gets 50 mpg, I bet one of the other conservatives would have started a thread with the title: "Kerry buys Japanese car, claims to know how to solve outsourcing" or some other BS like that.

Forget his SUV. He flys around the country on a private jet. One of his flights burns more fuel than any SUV does in 6 months time.

That is probably the truth. You think he has a Japanese made watch? Alert the media!

Does Kerry even own a car at all? Maybe he's chaufferred around everywhere on tax dollars/campaign money.

Yeah and Bush takes a bicycle everywhere he goes?

I don't get all the stuff about SUVs...isn't that just one component of how much gas you use or how much you pollute? Someone that drives an SUV 5 K per year isn't using nearly as much gas as someone that drives a hybrid 20 K per year, right? There are so many ways that people use more energy (or conserve energy) compared to normal that I don't understand why there is such a focus on whether or not someone owns an SUV. Maybe I'm missing something in this whole picture.

Tee, hee. I can't help but think that this would be similar to a reporter asking: "Senator Kerry, does your dog bite??"

Besides, if Kerry started telling his wife what kind of vehicle she could or couldn't buy, he'd be a Republican, wouldn't he?

Seriously, this nickel-and-dime nonsense is a waste of time, regardless of what candidate it's about.

You are probably correct. Of course he could have purchased a more economical American car.

My problem is with the limosine liberals that want the rules to apply to everyone else (Yes, conservatives like Bush are fair game). But when someone like Barbara Striesand tells everyone to conserve energy and then consumes it at a far greater rate than the average person then I think there is something wrong with that.

There are by the way, liberal activists, with means, who don't live in mansions or drive expensive cars. I have a great deal of respect for those individuals.

If liberals want to own many homes, or mansions and fly jets and drive SUV's or anything else then I am fine with that. But don't give me a guilt trip for doing the same {cough}Arriana Huffington.

SUV's are symbolic of greed, avarice and waste. They engender allot of hostility and are often referred to as evidence of what is wrong with America.

I don't agree with this notion. But if anyone does then it is only fair to focus that anger at EVERYONE who owns one. And liberals, lets get off the whole SUV thing in the first place. If it is ok for Kerry then it is ok for everyone, ok?

Please see the point about the jet.

Not only that, but he flew his hair dresser to New York on it so he could get a hair cut for a "Meet The Press" interview. :p

News Flash: Politician turns out to be Weasel

Hmmm.... Who cares? If you start out with the assumption that any of these chumps is telling you the truth all the time, you shouldn't be allowed to vote.

He should have brought a speech writer, that was another sorry performance. Why do his handlers let him talk with out clearing it with them first.

It is silly but so much fun to watch the candidates step on there words.

But that's not the point; most people couldn't care less that he owns an SUV or a Toyota Prius or whatever. People would care, however, if he claimed "I am a true patriot, I never bought a japanese car", and when shown a Prius in his driveway say "er, it's my wife's, so it's not REALLY mine".
