Kerry's SUV

He owns a Ford Nuance™

Actually, he and his wife own four or five SUVs. I wish he would let me have one.

But that's not the point; most people couldn't care less that he owns an SUV or a Toyota Prius or whatever. People would care, however, if he claimed "I am a true patriot, I never bought a japanese car", and when shown a Prius in his driveway say "er, it's my wife's, so it's not REALLY mine".

I see your point, and I agree that it was a bad idea for Kerry to handle the situation in the way that he did. However, there isn't anything he could have said or done that wouldn't have resulted in him getting attacked in one way or another.
1. If he would have said "yes, I own an SUV", then the Repubs would have called him a hypocrite. But come on, the guy is a senator, he obviously has a need for that type of vehicle...is there any high occupancy vehicle on the market that also gets high gas mileage? Not that I know of.
2. If he would have tried to avoid the hypocrisy charges by buying a Prius, like I stated before, he would have been attacked for buying a Japanese car. I suppose he could have bought a Ford Focus or something, as Randfan stated, but I don't think there are any American hybrid vehicles that are as clean as the Prius.
3. If he would have lied about it and claimed not to have an SUV (I think he actually lied at first), then he would have been called a liar.

So he handled it in the best way that he could, by saying that it was his wife's SUV. As Brown said, who is Kerry to tell his wife what she can buy?

But I agree that he shouldn't have lied about it in the first place.

What bugs me is seeing all these govt SUVs. Why do they need SUVS? They cost a hell of alot. couldnt they buy vans ifthey need the room.

I think they need SUVs for security reasons. But there are probably other reasons as well.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Kerry's SUV

I agree with your post. It really is a no win situation.

I think this is the ultimate issue. Doesn't everyone have a right to decide what the reasons are for owning an SUV? If there are valid resons for senators then can't there be valid reasons for regular folks?

I would like to see the SUV bashing stopped. I would like to see kerry simply say, "hey, I have a need for one and I like them. I think everyone who wants one should have one!"

The political blame game.

"It's not mine, it's my wife's."

"I didn't start this war, Saddam did."

What's the difference???

I don't get it.

Are all politicians stupid? Is it simply a matter of principle that they can't tell the simple truth about anything? Even the dumbest politician must be smart enough to no that people like you much better if you just tell the truth and either apologize for it or don't. Example: "Yes, I once drank too much and drove off the road and hit a tree. I regret that I was young and stupid." or "Yes, I did once call Jesse Jackson a butt plug. That's how I feel and I won't apologize for feeling that way." Why is it a prerequisite for a politician that he be a weasel? People don't like weasels. People like people who own up to their mistakes or opinions. It would be nice to have the occasional politician who isn't spoon fed by handlers. Telling the truth - such simple concept.

Link? At least one that is not ScaifeMax or FrontPageMag.
Letterman was joking about it the other day, the only links I can find are blogs such as the Drudge Report. Oh, and he flew her to Pittsburgh, not New York. Make what you will of it.

Do his handlers tell him to make all those goofy hand gestures he uses when he talks? If he does get elected impersonators will have lots of material to work with!

So its just a rumor then. A rumor sort of like how Shrub partied while he was supposedly working for pappy's pal in Alabama - and incurring active service pay.

There are by the way, liberal activists, with means, who don't live in mansions or drive expensive cars. I have a great deal of respect for those individuals.

I don't get this. Apart from the gas guzzling, I don't see anything wrong with people with means actually spending their dough so that some poor suckers can have a job. Waste may be ostentatious, but luxury goods are probably the best and most successful means of distributing wealth that has ever been invented.

So true, remember the "luxury tax" on high-ticket items a few years back? Stick it to the rich by taxing the hell out of expensive boats, cars, etc.

Of course, then when the average Joes employed at the factories making them lost their jobs because sales went way down, even politicians saw the light and repealed it.

This election is getting more stupid by the minute. I really really don't care if Kerry drives the Durango with a 5.7L HEMI or a hybrid.

Go back and read my post. I said I have no problem with Liberals spending money or using energy like it's going out of style. What I have a problem with are those liberals like Barbra Stiesand and Arriana Huffington who expects people to conserve energy but own masions that take an enormus amount of energy to heat and cool. Also the travel by limos and private jets.

Oh, I think I understand the problem you are having with my post. Expensive homes and expensive cars are typically innefecient though that is not necassarily the case. I will restate, there are liberals who do as they say. If they recomend that people conserve energy then they take the bus or own an efficent car and live in a smaller apartment or more modest home.

By all means, (pun intended) spend liberals and use energy, I only ask that if you want to give me a guilt trip or suggest I be more energy conscious then take the bus and get a smaller home. Otherwise I will just think that because you are rich that you are entitled to consume more.

So its just a rumor then.

Was reported as fact by the NY Post and the NY Dainly News. Does't mean it's true, but it really doesn't sound like the kind of vicious myth someone will invent on purpose.

Preach it, brother! Amen!

Kerry wears expensive suits!!!! He uses that fancy 3 ply toilet paper!!!!!

Man the press is really reaching. How about they try n focus on what Kerry and Bush will do on specific issues. Thatd be a start.

Campaign 2004 pop quiz

Which of the following is a valid campaign issue?

1) Kerry owns and SUV.

2) Bush took our country into war on a mountain of lies.

Weasel?

Well, it seems to me that maybe the characteristics of acting like a Weasel, are some of the same characteristics for being a successful politician.

But yes, it is definitely better just to admit things, apologize, say "thanks for bringing that to my attention" and moving on.

But I imagine that most of these politicians are powerful men, who drive powerful cars, ride in powerful airplanes, etc. So there are probably a lot of SUVs out there.

Wonder what kind of car Nader drives? Or does he bike?

I've heard Ralph Nader say in an interview that he doesn't own a car. The interviewer kind poked fun at it and acted like it was weird to not own a car. But Nader said he lives in a city and therefore he can take cabs or public transportation and he doesn't need a car so he doesn't have one. I don't know why the interviewer felt compelled to make a big deal out of it.

Because really important topics are complex and beyond the attention span of most audiences, even ones oriented toward political issues. Worrying about whether Nader has a car is completely unconnected to anything that matters, and therefore requires little thought.
