Just got a Kindle.

I have question if this hasnt been covered before, I have a first version Kindle Fire, and just this weekend the LCD blew, which looks like a little airbag popping from the inside out. Quite fascinating to watch. But I called Amazon and they are replacing it with no problems. So thats good.
 
Just curious if anyone has acquired or otherwise used the new Kindle Paperwhite. It looks lovely from the pictures on line, but I'm interested in hearing if it's as easy on the eyes as the regular e-ink device.

I have!!!! I think I can sum up my view as:

:j1::clap::wave1:mdance::bigclap

Absolutely love it, love the lighting and I find it is most of the time even easier on the eyes as you can almost always set it for the right level of brightness.

My only complaint with it is that it is a tad too light and the back is a tad slippy. Which is why I am going to get a case for mine.

Glad to hear it, Darat. I may go take a look at the similar Kobo device that my favorite local book store is pushing as an alternative. OTOH, if Amazon puts it on sale this week, I may not be able to resist.

Re: cases, I hadn't seen that one but wouldn't want to carry my Kindle around without one. I can be a bit rough on electronics.

its apparently when the lcd fails, it begins to expand, the seal along the side of my kindle fire popped open an inch wide as a result. According to their customer service its a known if unknown issue.

I originally bought a "special offers" Kindle e-ink reader a couple of years ago, but it stopped working for some reason. Around this time, the Kindle Fire was released, so I decided to get one of those instead of replacing the plain e-reader. Once the Fire gives out (hopefully not for some time), I'll probably go back to a plain ol' e-reader. If there's an e-reader with a backlight, though, I'd probably go for that--I loved that I could read my e-reader in direct sunlight, but hated that I couldn't read it in dim light; and I have the opposite problem with the Kindle Fire (and glare).

I do like that I can watch Netflix on my Kindle Fire, though. :D

You might want to look at the new Kindle Paperwhite, which is e-ink but has a built-in light.

I do like that I can watch Netflix on my Kindle Fire, though. :D

I have a tablet, but I'd still rather read books on a dedicated device. I'm too easily distracted by the other possibilities.
 
I just got my kindle paperwhite. It's absolutely yummy! I read some complaints about the light not being even across the screen or it just being a sort of integrated side light, but it's none of that! The screen glows evenly and at an adjustable level so it's doesn't have to be too bright. Can't fault it!
 
Just got a Second Kindle (the Vanilla 70 buck model)as a back up and for traveling. Had a few problem getting it set up,called support,and they called back within a minute and solved the problem. Was pleasnely surprised, since I am sort of used to crappy support from big companies.

Amazon, in my recent experience, is like that ALL the time. You did not have a unique experience.
 
Amazon's Kindle customer service get very good reviews. They take it seriously, and it shows.

Absolutely. I think I mentioned earlier in this thread how they replaced my Kindle DX for free, even though it was well out of warranty, when the navigation thingy broke.
 
BTW, I don't recall if I mentioned this; If you have the Kindle with the free 3G, this works with the Edge signal on Royal Caribbean cruise ships, and for free there too.

While we were on our vacation, I was able to buy books to read and also check my gmail (very slowly) using the web browser. One hint; Set your gmail up for low-bandwidth use before you go or it is painful to do so once on the slow edge service. You sometimes had to hit reload repeatedly.

Not something I would expect to use for business correspondence, but it was fine for communicating with the dog sitter.
