Just got a Kindle.

Just noticed the software's been updated, no great change as far as I can see but does page turning seem faster and/or slightly different to anyone else?

Mine hasn't updated yet, I'll see if I spot any difference when it does. The main change seems to be that it will now sync any documents you've downloaded to the Kindle, not just ones from Amazon.

It is supposed to be 10% faster.

I thought the update was supposed to happen automatically if you turned on your wireless? Mine still hasn't updated, and I don't really want to go through all the hassle of setting up my computer to download the update.

Am I doing something wrong?

I don't think so. I'm also too lazy to do a manual update, and mine hasn't updated automatically yet either.

Turn on your wireless, let it sit until it goes into sleep mode. In a few minutes, the Updating screen will come on instructing you not to turn it off until it is complete and you will see a progress bar while it installs the update. I don't know if works over 3G. Mine has 3G, but the instructions said to use wi-fi, so I made sure I was on a wi-fi connection.
To update your Kindle Keyboard software, turn your wireless on and connect to an available Wi-Fi network.
From the Home screen, press Menu and select "Sync and Check for Items." The software update will automatically download in the background and install when your Kindle Keyboard goes into sleep mode.

Nopers, did the same thing, and no dice. No bar came up.

If you don't have the last most recent version it won't automatically download. I was at 3.1, and had to do a manual update. The instructions go over this. If you have the last most recent version, then I dunno.

I'm not sure the update depends on which version you were on. I was on 3.1 earlier today, made sure the wifi was on and connected, and plugged the Kindle in to charge, and just now saw that it has been updated automatically to 3.3.

I'm thinking it's more likely that it will only update automatically either when it is being charged or maybe when it's fully charged, or close to it. It probably doesn't start the update if there is any chance that the battery will run down during the process. That could seriously mess things up.

My understanding is that Amazon roll out the automatic updates over a period of time, so it may take while for them to get to you.

I had the same impression, that not everyone gets the update at once. I'm in no great hurry to update; I'm leaving it to see if it does happen automatically, as I've jailbroken mine (mainly to avoid the creepy picture of Emily Dickinson :)), and I'm not sure (and can't be arsed to check) if that will stop an automatic upgrade.

It doesn't.

This could be. The email I received from Amazon implied the update would just "happen" so long as the wireless was turned on. I'm in no rush. There are no major upgrades, I was just curious why it hadn't done what Amazon said. :D

I am looking forward to the Fire. I plan to pass my Kindle to my wife.

Really? It doesn't strike me as a replacement for reading books, more a new, multi-media device. It weighs a lot more, and I don't know how easy it would be to use in bright sunlight. I would also guess battery life is much shorter. I know the Kindle app does look very nice on other devices (I have an Android phone, and an HP Touchpad), especially with colour for the book covers and so on, but for extended reading I find the current Kindle the best option.
