Just got a Kindle.

Don't make it sound silly. :)

I will go back and forth between reading on my Kindle or my iPad, depending upon the ambient light. And sometimes I will find myself with unexpected downtime and all I've got with me is my iPhone (my eyesight isn't bad yet). So it isn't unusual for me to be reading the same book on three devices.

Not all of us have that ability.

Even if unlimited sharing of purchased books were allowed - I urge you to respect intellectual property rights. Of course it doesn't matter on free stuff.

The Kindle hasn't captured my heart yet but they sure seem handy. I've always loved actual books I buy a LOT of used ones and they are piling up.

I never thought my heart would be captured. But somehow, out of all the electronic doodads and gadgets I've ever owned, I find myself having an irrational affection for the darned thing. I LOVE my Kindle. There, I said it.

I'm quite fond of mine, and after tonight, I don't think I'll be able to get rid of it even after I eventually upgrade to a newer model.

I like my Kindle too, but I've ended up doing more reading on my Droid2 phone using the Kindle App, which is free. Mainly because I carry the phone more. But, they synch up which makes switching between devices very easy. The only downside to the phone app is that it burns through the phone battery quickly when reading, so you have to remember to keep it charged. No biggie.

The Kindle Fire has been officially announced, shipping November 15. At $199, it's the cheapest Android tablet on the market for the specs, which way outclass the Nook Color; the dual-core processor alone should make a huge difference when dealing with video.

I'll be waiting to see if they get their 10" tablet to market in the spring (since I already have the Nook Color), but this looks like a very nice 7-incher for the money...and if it gets rooted it will be absolutely perfect. ;)

Lots of new Kindles but of course us 3rd worlders will have to wait to see them, all we can get is the new cheapo one, aren't our glass beads as good as anyone else's?

Amazon is doing you a favor. They know that colors are hard for your poor, emaciated eyes to process and don't want to cheat you by selling equipment that you won't be able to fully enjoy.

Get that vitamin A consumption up and maybe Amazon will feel more comfortable selling you nice things.

They've also just launched a new e-ink Kindle, smaller and lighter, and cheaper. Or has this been out for a while in the US?

ETA: Just noticed why it is smaller; no keyboard. That would reduce its usefulness as a backup web browsing device! Also, wifi only, no 3G.

The lack of a keyboard is new. What they also apparently aren't launching worldwide yet are the new "Kindle Touch" devices. They use the same IR touchscreen tech as the Barnes and Noble Nook Touch.

If they continue including the web browser in those devices, the experience would be far superior to the non-touchscreen Kindles. In fact, for just simple taps I've found my Nook Touch to be much nicer to use than traditional LCD touchscreens. It's precise and the lightest tap will do since you're breaking the IR plane before actually touching the screen.

It's kind of funny that after kicking the eReader game into high gear, Amazon has been playing some tech catchup with Barnes & Noble.

I like several things about the new Kindle Touch, but I wonder if you'll be able to use it inside a Ziploc bag.... that's how I use my current Kindle when I want to read it in the tub.

I'm finding lately that I'm reading a lot of new authors on the Kindle, and some of them ain't half bad. I just finished this one, which I think anyone who likes my NWO Kitty comics would enjoy:

With new authors often having books available for less than $2.99, I'm much more willing to take a risk on it, because if it sucks, I'm not out very much.

I can't access Amazon on this PC (dumb work machine policy), but it shouldn't be a problem. First, since the touch functions are infrared-based, it doesn't need the touch of a conductor like a capacitive touchscreen. So, breaking the IR plane through the plastic of the Ziploc should work just fine. Also, and this is the part I can't verify from the sites I've seen so far, it looks like there are hardware buttons on either side of the Kindle Touch.

I couldn't resist ordering myself a fire. I'm a total sucker for this kind of stuff. I love my current kindle even though I prefer real books. I use it for reading the newspaper and quite a few magazines, not books for the most part.

I agree with the above pic in that the kindle is flim-flam. It's actually fairly cool the problem is that books made of paper are cooler.
