Just got a Kindle.

This might have been answered already, but is there a way to write on the Kindle, like a notes program or some sort of word processing? Because if there is, I'm ordering it as soon as someone answers.

You can always open a draft in gmail and take notes.

The keyboard is not the best thing for notes, though.

It's an ebook reader not a general computer.

This is why I was initially confused by Keeper's post.

I've had my Kindle 3 since it came out last year, and I've never turned it off, just put it to sleep, or let it go to sleep on its own.

By 'sleep' do you mean the mode when the various screen savers come on? I assumed they drain battery power, unless they disappear after a while?

I noticed this difference between the Kindle 2 and 3. With the Kindle 2, sliding the button and holding for 5 seconds would turn it off (rather than just putting it to sleep). Then a slide and release of the button would turn it back on within a second or two. The Kindle 3 has a 15 second hold to turn it off, and it takes a long time to restart - maybe 30 seconds or more. Needless to say, I don't bother turning off my Kindle 3. There doesn't seem to be any point anyways. The battery life is so long it took 6 weeks before my mom noticed that she had left her charger cable at my place (she spent Christmas here and I gave her a Kindle 3 as a present).

That's interesting, it's about 8-10 secs for me (not exactly a problem, just a minor irritant) but start up is almost immediate. Seems there may be some variation but sounds like I shouldn't be bothering with turn off anyway.

I've now joined the cult club and got a kindle for my birthday :D
Had time to chuck a couple of books on it before I came to work.
Reading under the dome by Stephen king at the moment, so much easier to hold the kindle to read it than the big paperback I was reading

Haven't had much of a chance to look at the kindle yet but I was quite impressed by how good the screen actually looks. Was better than I expected

I've been reading the kindle threads on here for a little while and they've conviced me it would be a good thing to get so I can read at work (I'm a security guard who works night shiftwork).

Got to look through the different links we've had on here for free books and how to guides but so far it seems like a great way to read books. I love the idea of carrying so many books with me with almost no weight. I ride a motorbike to work so beats carrying any big books to read at work

I'm pretty sure that displaying something on the screen doesn't use any power, it's changing what's there which does.

Kindle glitch alert

MrsB and I have similar tastes in novels, so I jog along happily reading her recommendations from the stack she's finished.

Then I bought her a Kindle a few weeks ago, so now I need a Kindle too :( Should have seen this coming, frankly.

Congrats to the new Kindle owners! I'm sure you'll enjoy them. :)

Thanks to everyone who posted links to sites with free books. :) I haz a Kindle app on my Cruz ereader, so those should come in handy.

To the person who asked about Borders' ereader and the free books very early in the thread: it's a rip-off. The free books are proprietary to Borders' app, which you can't even open unless you're connected to the internet. My Cruz came with a Borders app and I downloaded a bunch of free books while I was in a hotspot. I was very disappointed when I got home and couldn't read any of the books. :(

I don't have a Kindle but I use Kindle for Android and PC. While it isn't as optimal for viewing as the Kindle's lovely E-Ink screen, it makes things much easier to read than having to lug around a bunch of books.

I must admit, I get a little happier with Amazon every day.
