John Edwards on Dr. Oz

I was sure I'd seen a thread on this earlier, but can't seem to find it using the search function. Anyway, the estimable Dr. will have Mr. Edwards on today, with the subject being "can talking to the dead be good for you?"

Now, in the best of all possible worlds, Oz would expose Edwards for the fraudulent charlatan he is, and explain how "talking to the dead" might just conceivably be used as a clinical tool by a mental-health professional....With the caveat that the patient understands what's going on...
Somehow I doubt this will be the tenor of the show.......

The title of the show: “Psychic Mediums: Are They The New Therapists”

A recap:

On the Doctor Oz show today, psychic medium John Edward came on the show to talk about talking with dead loved ones who have passed on. But the show wasn’t really about John Edward communicating with our loved ones, it was about US learning to communicate! Spooky!

Edward says that when you’re in the early stages of grief, that is not the time to try and find a medium, especially parents who lost a child. He also recommended getting therapy first.

Edward talked to a couple of girls in the audience whose mother had passed on and he knew about some sensitive conversations they had about some racy photos taken at a bachelorette party. I think some of those photos were on Facebook, which could explain how Edward knew about them (sorry…I’m not a believer in this).

From TV Guide:
...
TV Guide Magazine: And you now consider what Edward does to be a legit form of grief therapy?

Oz: I can see how it could help people who are dealing with grief, and how it might bring closure to relationships, and help make people more comfortable with the idea of death. We've spoken with the American Psychological Association who say they don't know if this works or not. But if it helps with grief, why not? I'm open to the idea.

TV Guide Magazine: What specifically about Edward did you find so believable?

Oz: That's the exact word — he's specific. When he started [his readings] with our audience, I expected him to say things like, "I feel a white light behind you. A masculine light. Is there anyone in your family that might represent?" Well, of course! We all have someone male who died. But that's not what John did. He wasn't vague. He wasn't fuzzy. In one case he said, "Someone very near you had a loved one who died on Valentine's Day. I get the feeling they were run over by a car or a truck." At first John was saying this to one particular woman in the audience, and she kept insisting she didn't know anyone who died that way. It was really awkward. [Laughs] We must have sat there three or four minutes — which in TV time is an eternity — while John badgered this poor woman. He was so certain he was in the right part of the audience. But this woman just would not cop to it! Then all of a sudden, just to this woman's right, was this other young woman who whispered, "It's me." She was completely ashen and almost couldn't speak. It turns out, her best friend's brother was run over by a truck and killed on Valentine's Day. John had all the details absolutely right. And he didn't do this just once. He did it on our show, like, five times!

In sum, he was specific and correct, but he wasn't.

John edwards on Dr. Oz.

The AVGN had a quote that really sums up the situation. To put it in forum friendly language :

It is like urinating in a spot where one has already defecated.

John Edward was in Canada and appeared on The Marilyn Denis Show today, a national morning/afternoon talk show aired on the CTV television network. He had quite a long segment on it too, including, it appeared, doing a reading on an audience member or two.

Here's the show's page. The video of the episode is already available. (I cannot, however, vouch if the show video will play for those outside Canada.)

From looking at additional web pages there, it appears John "The Biggest Douche in the Universe" Edward has an entire Canadian tour going on, involving stops in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal, Saskatoon, and Toronto. I guess that explains his presence on the show today.

That was disgusting! A creepy, creepy man. I Watched the first reading and almost puked. Here was his first impression:

Someone's father. Couldn't speak near the end, issue with speech. The month of november or, the 11th of the month has to be tied in, birth or anniversery. Joseph or a Joe. J or a G name. Living or past.

Seriously that was his entire impression from the spirit.

He get's a woman out of the audience, starts talking about a ring, some big issue with a ring. She said no nothing to do with that exists, but he said yes there is, you just don't know about it (fail). Asks a bunch of leading questions that lead no where. Guesses emphysema which was right (wow shocking hit!) Says one person was not able to be there at the end (wow huge hit!) . Asks about an important Donna, again, the person says no (fail). That was pretty much it. Just ridiculous beyond words.

Of course, CTV is the network that carries Dr. Oz. Trash.

Since I live not far from where that was taped I felt compelled to email them to convey just how much I appreciate the work they are doing.

As if being on CTV wasn't enough, Edward just appeared on Thursday night's episode of the CBC program George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. The show's web page can be found here.

No video up as yet, the episode literally just finished airing a few minutes ago. It'll probably be posted sometime on Friday. I'll provide the link when it's available. I only watched the interview for a very brief moment, but I did not get the impression that Mr. Strombo put any heat on Edward at all.

(Full disclosure: I loathe George Stroumboulopoulos. His show got cut from an hour to a half-hour this season, and I rejoiced. Only a half-hour left to cut!)

That's just terrible. I recently watched a George Stroumboulopoulos interview with "The Amazing Kreskin" where the old con blatantly implied that he predicted 9/11 and that people should look into conspiracy theories. The transcript shows he predicted nothing and it was positively shameful. George didn't even take him to task for such a horrid ploy.

How do you just let people on your show say crazy stuff like that. I honestly see no positive reason to have them on in the first place. It's really not cool if you're just trying to be diplomatic, it's really not called for, these people are vicious. I don't know who in the psychic community knows they are a fraud and who thinks they actually have a gift. But it doesn't matter, they're toxic death.

Montel Williams and Dr. Oz (and by extension, Oprah) are the facilitators of douchery. And in the case of Montel, help elevate Sylvia Brown to the douche she is today. Shouldn't they all be in the running somewhere?

Sadly, neither The Marilyn Denis Show nor George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight have any sort of direct viewer comments section, else I would have posted some scathing remarks. The only way to make comments about/to the shows, as far as I can tell, is to do so via Twitter or Facebook (neither of which are of the least bit of interest to me).

I still say the best way ****** these people would to just agree with everything they say and lead them down a “merry” path so to speak.

Montell and Oprah are just accesories to the fact, I am interested in the main offender.

Wow! When did Kreskin go from being an astounding mentalist act (I don't recall him ever claiming any special paranormal ability) to making predictions and dabbling in other woo?

I watched the George Snuffleupagus interview. Unsurprisingly, the skeptical questions were far too soft, far too fawning, for anyone's satisfaction. Instead of actually difficult questions, he's just giving him springboards to launch into his fallacious gambits. At no point was it mentioned that people such as Derren Brown can get the exact same results through cold reading. At least he didn't let him work the audience.

Kreskin is a waffler. It depends who asks, why and when. In general, he has always been a scumbag, depending who you ask. I know that Penn Jillette hates him for dozens of reasons, mostly because Kreskin sold him and his parents a useless ESP game when he was 12, that's A grade trash right there. Johnny Carson stopped having him on when Kreskin would allure to special powers. And even Art Bell, the king of kooks banned him for some stupid stunt. Maybe Kreskin thinks he's some kind of hero for being a deep undercover troll. Nah, he's a scumbag.

ETA: Just look at the comments on the youtube video of him on "The Hour" half of the people believe that he's the real deal and there's even a lot of comments about Randi's prize being corrupt or Kreskin could easily win it. He's absolutely playing for the other team.

For those interested, the video of the Edward interview on George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight is now up on the CBC web site. You can find it here. You have to sit through some ads first, and the interview starts at about the 10:30 mark.

Same caveat as before—I can't vouch if it'll play for those folks outside of Canada.

Thanks for linking it, Corsair. I am able to view it in the US but there is a link on that page to a second video called "John Edward's spooky experience on the George Tonight set" which will not load for me. <cue eerie music>

There was a problem with his mic. As the techs are trying to fix it and "weird" stuff is happening, he brags that he "blew out four mics" while taping his show. Claims to blow out headphones. Claimed to blow up a radiation detector. George fawned the whole time like "Wow, it's a fact that you blow stuff up! Wow our technical difficulties are proving it even more!"

Woos of all kinds love to brag bout how their energy is so powerful it breaks electronics. All George had to do is say "Wow that's a testable claim, you should test that or else you're just a big douche!" But no, he giggles over it like it's some big joke.
