<quickly shreds incriminating evidence>
Thank you, ddt, for posting the link to the actual article, given that context can be illuminating, and media reports can be ... not so useful.
OK, he cites Star Trek and Tom Clancy to define the parameters of his 'what ifs'.
He specifically frames it as 'what would the Israeli PM consider out of all options', in this hypothetical.
And in the real world, every nation on Earth with policy wonks and analysts, already has a file room full of these sorts of scenarios.
This was no more 'calling for a hit on the President' than the man in the moon, this is gullible people letting headlines do their thinking for them.
Obama is actually fairly popular in Israel according to recent poles. Obama's policies regarding Israel are in line with previous presidents, and in some cases are more pro-Israel than previous presidents. It's largely the GOP that has painted Obama as anti-Israel, and it seems to be working in this country.

So it should have come as no surprise, I suppose, that a cluster of people here, people who cloak themselves in the garb of the pious, have decided to marry their furious loathing of Barack Obama to the custom of their faith, and to do what some in America have been doing for more than a year now: Hating Barack Obama as a new form of religious observance.
Once, on the holiday of Lag B'Omer, which falls this Saturday night, children cast into bonfires images of Adolf Hitler and others who have preached and in some cases practiced the mass killing of Jews.
This year, ahead of the Saturday night observance, professed followers of Meir Kahane have openly boasted of preparing effigies of the American president for distribution and incineration in bonfires across the country.
"There is no doubt that now the enemy of the Jewish people is Barack Hussein Obama," said pro-Kahane activist Noam Federman, a leader of the campaign.
"Obama is the most anti-Semitic president the U.S. has ever had," Federman told Maariv daily's website last week. "The time has come for our blind politicians to wake up and understand that you can't make policy according to the obsession of an Israel-hater."
These are not the rational people who oppose, take issue and disagree with Obama over his policies, his views, his performance. Not at all. These are the people who execrate the man, who despise him with every cell of their being, whose rage at his very name roars like napalm.
These are people who speak in a new spiritual language, that of ritual terrorism.
http://www.haaretz.com/news/why-do-israelis-dislike-barack-obama-1.4930There are many people, gifted with rare intelligence and tolerance for humankind, who, when addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, run off the rails.
This week, it was the turn of former American Jewish Congress national director Henry Siegman. Noting opinion polls showing that a bare six to eight percent of the Israeli public supports Barack Obama, Siegman concludes that the dislike for Obama is a reflection not of the president's policies, but of something essential - and fundamentally defective - in the Israeli people itself:
"The Israeli reaction to serious peacemaking efforts is nothing less than pathological," Siegman writes, calling it "the consequence of an inability to adjust to the Jewish people's reentry into history with a state of their own following 2,000 years of powerlessness and victimhood."
Some people such as....

As to polls this article claims support is minisucle

Perhaps there are other polls that ask a different question.
Those articles are fairly dated. In particular, the one citing polls is from 2009. See post #16 in this thread for more recent data.
What do you mean with that?Thank you, ddt, for posting the link to the actual article, given that context can be illuminating, and media reports can be ... not so useful.

That's the part I don't understand as well. Going along with the scenario: the POTUS is assassinated, the VP takes his place, and a couple of days later gets a report from the FBI that the Mossad was behind it. The logical reaction would be to drop Israel like a ton of bricks. There is no reason to believe the US Vice President will have any substantial differences over policy with the President, especially not regarding such a diplomatic and military hot-spot as the Middle East. Replacing one with the other will likely have no effect at all on policy towards Israel...
... Unless the US knows that Israel ordered the assassination. But I hardly think such knowledge would cow the new US president into complying with Israel's demands. The entire column is lurid, contrafactual, geopolitical slashfiction. It wouldn't even make sense as a Dan Brown novel, let alone a Tom Clancy novel or an episode of Star Trek.

Nowhere does he call on anyone to *carry out* the assassination, which is what the headlines claim. What do you mean with that?
The way he phrases yes, he specifically calls on the reader. He begins the column with
"You are Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu."He then ends it with:
"With this in mind, I again ask you, Prime Minister Netanyahu, what would you do?"That's still the reader. So yes, he calls on the reader to make that choice.
This apart from lots of hyperbole - like Panetta's wish that Israel take a lethal bullet - and a continuous shifting of time frame: is this a question now or in 2017?

That much of a swing in three years? Amazing.
The US opinion seems to be swinging the other way.
Post #17Your points are all well-taken. He was still an idiot for writing it, and it could have been foreseen what the result would be of writing a "what if" about killing President Obama.
Which headlines claim that he calls on someone to carry out the assassination? Not the one posted in the OP.

Post #17The article cited in post #17 (nor any other I could find mentioned previously in the thread) doesn't. The ones you linked to here do. Thanks, and I agree with you that the ones you linked to above are wrong. The author doesn't actually call for a hit on President Obama ... he just poses a "what if" scenario that suggests that the reader consider doing so.
Nope, don't see any reason he should have anticipated any backlash from that!

"Jewish journalist calls for a 'hit' on Obama."
OK a poster generated claim, not the actual headline.
And again, governments around the world speculate on these sorts of scenarios routinely, where is the concern over that?
That was exactly my point.

Why the big swing back to Obama in Israel?
