Jewish paper's column catches Secret Service eye

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- The U.S. Secret Service is looking into a controversial column by an Atlanta Jewish newspaper publisher that mulled the assassination of an American president.

Andrew Adler, owner and publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times, wrote a January 13 column about the threat of Iran to Israel. He posed three options for the Jewish state to counter the Iranian regime.

One of them called for a "hit on a president in order to preserve Israel's existence."

"Give the go-ahead for U.S. based Mossad agents to take out a president deemed unfriendly to Israel in order for the current vice president to take his place and forcefully dictate that the United States' policy includes its helping the Jewish state obliterate its enemies."

U.S. Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie told CNN Saturday, "We are aware of it. We are taking the appropriate investigative steps."

The column, entitled "What would you do?" doesn't mention President Barack Obama's name, but U.S. Jewish groups that strongly denounced the column read the words as a reference to Obama himself. The column also refers to the administration's "never ending 'Alice in Wonderland' belief that diplomacy is the answer," an apparent dig at the Obama White House's foreign policy efforts at dialogue with such countries as Iran.

Whoever wrote that column is an idiot of epic proportions. Whoever it is, they've done Jews, newspaper publishers, Mossad agents, and Atlanta residents all a grave disservice.

Obama is actually fairly popular in Israel according to recent poles. Obama's policies regarding Israel are in line with previous presidents, and in some cases are more pro-Israel than previous presidents. It's largely the GOP that has painted Obama as anti-Israel, and it seems to be working in this country.

He's very popular among the Jewish people that I know.

I guess if you say "some Jews" then it technically doesn't count as a generalization because you could mean three people out of ten million, but it doesn't come across that way.

Interesting. I seem to remember him being very unpopular in Israel in the past.

At one point Obama was pushing Israel hard for peace talks, and condemned new settlements in disputed territory. It's a position taken by past presidents, but there was an impression that Obama was being too sympathetic to the Palestinians (an impression bolstered by the GOP).

More recently, Obama supported Israel in its opposition to the Palestinian bid for statehood in the U.N.

OK, he cites Star Trek and Tom Clancy to define the parameters of his 'what ifs'.

He specifically frames it as 'what would the Israeli PM consider out of all options', in this hypothetical.

And in the real world, every nation on Earth with policy wonks and analysts, already has a file room full of these sorts of scenarios.


This was no more 'calling for a hit on the President' than the man in the moon, this is gullible people letting headlines do their thinking for them.
