I much prefer anyone to church people, even though you say you are an athiest, they are the worst of the worst in most cases. This even though there are exceptions. You obviously are not an exception, but follow true to your origins of religion.

Um, how am I brainwashed by church people? I am usually a biblical minamlist. I just happen to speak Hebrew and know your derivation is inconsistant with basic Hebrew lexicons. That's like using a dictionary to tell you what a word means.

As for lies of a dangerous church system, most of what I believe about Judeo-Christian history comes from archaelogy and text critical analysis of the bible, not church or any such thing.

And yes, I confirm my name, right now I am at a library actually researching a scholarly publication, not just posting crap to geocities without actually looking at respectible sources (and FYI, a decent number of the books I am taking out today are by Bill Dever, certainly not the church brainwashing me, I also have one By Kenyon, who happens to have rejected the biblical account of the exodus and entrance to the Levant.) Man I'm glad the church brainwashed me, because apparently it told me to go out and do actual research, not make stuff up and talk about a language I DO NOT KNOW while spouting things about owning women.

He's way below the norm, believe me. Most of the Christians I know are fairly well acquainted with the Bible, and although they manage to rationalize (or perhaps irrationalize) its inconsistencies and contradictions, and to claim that they don't interpret the immutable word when they're doing just that with every breath, they at least do not attribute to Biblical texts the kind of wild and oxymoronic nonsense that David does. He's really in a class by himself, and that's not a compliment.

I make an exception for Catholics, who, in my experience are rigorously trained and catechized in their religion and almost illiterate in scriptural knowledge. The RC church finally had to relent and stop burning people for translating the bible into common tongues, but I don't think they ever really took to the idea of lay persons reading it.

I would love to see a real study on how many people have read the bible and how little they read and much they cherry-pick the hell (no pun) out of it. Reading too many of them is that they opened it and looked at the words. I think you give way to much credit..........:D

Everybody cherry-picks. Even the most fundy of fundies cherrypick and even the Jehovah's witless who claim with great solemnity "we don't interpret" cherry-pick and interpret the hell out of it. How can you not? It's useless if you don't. I find parts of the bible quite useful, inspirational even, and freely admit to cherry-picking, since I do not consider it inerrant or canonical. If you find a cherry, why not pick it? Still, even those who just open it and look at the words are more likely than Davidjayjordan to understand what those words are saying. DJJ is sui generis in the world of dynamic redefinition, misapprehension and misconstruction.

There is a relatively new book out, its called somthing like Religious Illiteracy or somthing (I referenced it awhile ago on some thread but cannot remember which, sorry) and its not a study, but its by a religion Dept head at some college (sorry again can't remember) and he gave this easy quiz to all incoming students in their intro undergrad class and most of them did horrible. Did't know four gospels, what the Koran was, any Hindu scriptures etc.

Its an argument for teaching religion in a secular maner, but its sounds like it might have some of the info you are interested in (havn't had time to look at it yet myself). I can find the title later if anyone is interested.
