It's so frustrating...

A contradiction is a contradiction. An instance of cruelty and violence is an instance of cruelty and violence.

And, you are wrong. Every citation you pull up from the list takes you to the full passage.

I take it you've never used the SAB yourself?

I actually have. And they had to use their own criteria to organize verses they've found and they've also had to decide if it was a YES or NO, or PRO or CON because that's how they've organized it.

Probably if he told me so with his own voice.
But you said you were starting to wonder if Christianity wasn't true.

I was really asking what would make you wonder such a thing. Is there some piece of positive evidence that someone has put before you that you find compelling?

That's where I first read it, too. I'd expected more from a former atheistic/skeptic and was disappointed in the drivel (as above) he was willing to accept by way of explanation.

Is it just me or does much of the writings of the Old Testament prophets, especially Ezekiel, read like the ramblings of modern-day middle eastern terrorists?

That's because mohammed stole a lot of the old testament for the qu'ran.

Could someone help?

Relax, stop worrying about it. There is no god and there isn't a hell. You're not going anywhere after you die. You are worried over absolutely NOTHING...

(Oh yeah, and cut down on the amount of TV you watch and try to get a good night's rest. You'll be just fine...)

God Hates Brats

Proverbs 23: 13-14
"Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with a rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with a rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell."

Proverbs 20:30
"Blows that wound cleanse away evil; strokes make clean the innermost parts"

Leviticus 20:9
" For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood [shall be] upon him."

Spare the rod and spoil the child

O little Jesus meek and mild.

Smite me with your rod again

To keep me from the stain of sin

The stain is spreading!!

Oh no! Oh no!

My flesh trembles with each blow

The rod is harder it strikes again.

Release is sudden

There is no sin

I was hitchhiking with a friend in my college days. We had traveled across half the US, up into Canada and we were trying to get a ride out of Banff. It was difficult because there was competition so we headed on down the long lonely country road on foot. Quite a while later and a few miles away my shoe fell apart. The sole fell off, there was no hope of repair and it was not going to be pretty going barefoot to the next town or until we got a ride. When low and behold right there on the side of the road in the middle of the forest within minutes, nay seconds, of the shoe disaster was a perfectly good pair of PUMA tennis shoes that were a perfect fit.

They were my favorite shoes for more than a year after that, until they completely wore out. No gods involved, just a very incredible but very nice coincidence.
.
Another one.. on a cross country ride on my motorcycle, with a full fairing and windscreen, out in the middle of Arizona, the scooter fell over and broke the windshield when I was gassing it up.
At the next pump was a salesman for...... duct tape... who gave me a roll to tape the broken parts together!
Lasted for the rest of the trip.
And there's the time it was snowing like all get out at work, which then closed for the day.
To the local hardware store to get chains to get back home. They sold out, but... the -insurance salesman- standing next to me had a set at the office he didn't need, and gave to me. Without any sales pitch!
Truly the Lord works in mysterious ways.
I tried that approach with the clippers, and she agreed, but still, no nookie! :(

By the way - if you're interested in being a Christian you might want to first stick with Jesus teachings first since He's the founder and Teacher - his teachings, for Christians, supersede and reinterpret the Old Testament teachings. (Well - actually, He put the intention of many of the laws back in line to their original purpose). Just my two cents.

They do? I think that the bible itself disagrees with you. Try Mark 5:18-19 and Luke 16:17 to start with. Then if you think that doesn't say enough, Jesus reiterates Leviticus 20:9 in Mark 7:10. If you think any of that is a matter of interpretation, it isn't. Read 2 Peter 20-21 for that.

You'll find that most of what Christians believe comes not from Jesus, but rather from Paul, who incidentally never met Jesus.

Perhaps the clippers still weren't big enough. Despite what they say, size actually does matter y'know...
.
We won't go into -that-!
The coincidences as I've mentioned could easily be attributed to the benevolent handling of lives by BSD.. until one reads the papers about the latest murders done in His name around the world.
Nail clippers, shoes, these pale in importance to the loss of so many blameless irreplaceable lives over nothing more than the ravings of psychotics.

Here's The Truth:

No one can prove it to you or disprove it. You have to do that for yourself, and whatever you come up with at the end is no one's business but your own.

If you want to be a Christian, then be one.
If you don't, then don't.

Life sucks no matter what you do, just bear that in mind.

Ah yes, the atheists' favorite bible verse.

Used like the old GOTO statement in BASIC. :)

That may be the fave of some or even most atheists, but I have a different favorite.

Many people who have not examined their religious delusions carefully will turn to the Bible for comfort in times of sadness. Often, at times like these, they will go to the book of Psalms. And that is where I found out exactly how all-loving the God of Mercy is when dealing with human beings that are neither Jewish nor Christian. It's love, inclusiveness, mercy, and forgiveness in authentic Yahweh style. With no further ado, we bring you the Good News of God's genocide:

Blessed is the one who grabs your little children and smashes them against a rock.
--Psalm 137, verse 9

In another translation we find
"Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones." 137:9

Some might prefer the Douay-Rheims version:
Blessed be he that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock.

The context of this verse is that the chosen people, the One True Race, were asked to sing one of the Lord's songs, a song old Yahweh loved. So naturally they picked one with merciless slaughter of innocent infant children. In His mercy, of course.

You just don't get good baby killing songs anymore, the Bible is really the best source.

That is not what Jews mean when we say "Chosen People."

Please don't buy into the anti-semitic rhetoric.

I certainly did not intend to take the words of a genocidal and imaginary deity and put them in the mouths of real modern people who are Jewish. I see a clear distinction between the sociopathic teachings of an ancient genocidal tribal culture and people living in the world today.

It is the Bible with which I take exception, and the huge piles of fiction based upon it.

I have no ill will or condemnation for Jewish people, Christian people, or any other national or ethnic group.

Hate the delusion, not the deluded.

Are you sure that's the exact context of that psalm? Who asked them to sing the song? And what's the song about?

Oh, I'm sure.

It's just that, even in the Tanakh, I cannot recall the Jews being called the "One True Race."

The request came from their captors, the song is about the great joy of killing enemies, and it mentions killing little ones specifically.

If you need more details I'd suggest you ask your Imaginary Bearded Sky Daddy.

The request for the song came from their captors.

BABYLON: Sing us one of your songs.

ISREAL: OK [BEGINS SINGING] - "We'll praise anyone who treats you the way you treated us."

BABYLON: Smart-Alecks.

THE END.

What?

You're talking about Psalm 137?

The Psalm is about the sadness the Israelites have after Babylon captured Jerusalem and drove them into exile. It kinda drifts off into a revenge fantasy near the end.

Criticism of the Tanakh is well and good (how else do we arrive at the documentary hypothesis?), but I would expect vocal critics to at least be a little familiar with the work itself.
