Is it just me, or has Chick's artwork actually gotten worse somehow? How old is the guy, anyway?

No, you are not alone. I think it is obvious that he has ghostwriters and/or -artists at work. The quality and style of artwork varies too wildly to come from the pencil of only one man. For example, compare this strip to the one posted by the OP:

Nothing new here of course, most of the classic newspaper comic strips like Beetle Bailey or Hagar The Horribel are team efforts. But at least those teams try to keep the style consistent, whereas Chick & co. do not seem to care if their strips look professional one week and drawn by a 10-year old the next.
