It was weird to be a pro-war Liberal

TRAVIS,

Yes, there were most certainly errors made in the prosecution of the Iraq War. JUST Like they were made in damn near ALL wars!

They were made in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the War with Mexico and the War with Spain.

The First World War, the Second World War. the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Cold War.

SO? What is New?

20-20 Hind Site and Monday Morning Quarter Backing are always with us.

911 TRUTHERS?

They would not know what the truth is were it a sharp pointed cactus they sat on while Naked!

DRAGOONSTER,

Can you fathom that I, as military person, most probably care MORE about the lives and families of those who serve than non-military people do?

As far as your comment: "

"I sure as hell hope any serviceman who dies in foreign wars is doing it for a crucial goal. I don't think that's happened for 70 years."

Only proves your lack of sufficient knowledge and perhaps the ability to see the big picture. Only don't feel too bad as there are many, many, many like you

Yes, I AM PRO JUST WARS as are ALL Rational, Highly Intelligent and Logical people! (Does this leave you out? perhaps so.)

I am also PRO Law enforcment, PRO Fire Departments and PRO having a logical, rational brain.
So you would favor sending John Yoo, Rummy and Dick "Nosferatu" Cheney to trial for war crimes behind the torture memos, right?

If they aren't available elsewhere on the net you can just post them as Sword Of Truth says.

I feel very few people are objectively "pro-war" they are simply people who were in favor of a particular war within a particular context.

If I had to do it over again I would have preferred us to go into Iran instead of Iraq.

It was you who described yourself as "pro-war" so what you mean by that is presumably up to you.

However, I think it is quite astonishing that "if [you] had to do it over again" you would have "gone into" Iran instead of Iraq.

Would you mind explaining your rationale behind this?

Simple, we now know that the many experts were correct that Iraq was not pursuing a nuclear program. When you also consider my real goal was to improve the lives of the people of Iraq the invasion feels like a mistake.

Iran, on the other hand, is a known sponsor of terrorism and has a theocratic leadership which I never trust. But, even there, I should point out that I would prefer it if we avoid war with Iran.

So you were duped. Okay, I will buy that.

Yet after being duped you are at the front of the line demanding to be duped again.

I wasn't duped. I made a choice based on what I knew and my choice was, on the whole, wrong. Which is why I really want us to avoid war with Iran this time around. I think internal reform for Iran is possible and a lot of this recent talk smells of electioneering to me.

My statement was just about if someone told me I could choose a nation to invade but one of them must be invaded (so not invading someone is not an option for whatever reason) I would have not gone with Iraq.

I'll believe they'll close the Hormuz straights when I see it. But if they do it then a military response is appropriate.

So you don't think that anyone lied to you about it? You don't think you made your decision to support war in Iraq based on any lies? You don't think you based your decision on a belief that those who went to war on your behalf didn't have your own personal motives for going there at heart?

I hate to sound like a horrible cynic but these days I don't think anyone with the necessary accumulation of power allows their bleeding heart to guide them towards freeing the wretched of the Earth. It can happen, but in my opinion the best default position is to believe that you are being lied to unless you are given very compelling evidence to the contrary.

My decision, at the time, was based on the idea that Saddam was a huge murderous butthole. Evidence seems to bear out he definitely was. The whole WMD thing didn't come up until long after I had decided to be in favor of it.

But even though the evidence hasn't contradicted why I wanted the invasion I still think it was the wrong way to go now. In other words: despite looking at the same information I now come to a different conclusion.

Preesntly I feel torn over Syria, on the one hand these people are crying out for help well one side does anyway and that is the sticking point, we have a Governement clearing murdering its own citizens, but this is where it gets messy, there are several levels ot this, the sectarian, the political and the strategic, the sectarian is the differing religious groups, we back one against the ohter? the political who syas the other side is not as eequally murdereous? and fianlly the strategic, how long would we be embroiled.

Until one side is capable of taking up arms and overthrowing Assad, we would be better off doing kinky things with a meat grinder. Before Benghazi fell, we would not have been able to do a thing in Libya. That was why we had a chance to win in Afghanistan before the merry morons started playing generals and why Iraq was such a debacle from Jump Street.
