Is homeopathy a sham?

No problem. If you aint seen it before, there is no reason for you to know it. I know there are many acronyms out there that I have never seen.

It is ancient USENET shorthand, so I am never surprised when people don't recognize it. But abaddon beat me to explaining it. :D

My favorite was always the classic response to the question "How do I do X in program Y?": RTFM. HTH. HAND.

(Read The Frabjous(?)* Manual. Hope That Helps. Have A Nice Day.)

Anyway...back on topic.

YES

* Fine? Friendly? Fickle? Frilly? Frumpy? Funky? Flatulent? Fonetik? Freaky? Fahrvergnugen?

Ah the old RTFM procedure, not far removed from the ID ten T error.

In order to produce real homoeopathic beer, you would need to find some thing that produces the opposite symptoms of drunkenness, such as water. Potentising it would produce strong drunkenness. I wonder if the effect would be more pronounced if you dilute the water with alcohol?

You may think you're joking, but have a read of this great article on the Grauniad website on homeopathy; in the homeopath's own words.

Elaine Lewis, HPathy.com: "If you're sea sick, you can make a remedy out of sea water; if you're sick from vacationing in Mexico, you can make a remedy out of the pathogen-infested local water (no offense to our lovely Mexican readers)!"

Society of Homeopaths, UK's leading professional body: "For example, drinking too much coffee can cause sleeplessness and agitation, so according to this principle, when made into a homeopathic medicine, it could be used to treat people with these symptoms."

Elaine Lewis: "The list of possibilities is endless."

Kees Dam, International Homeopathic Internet Journal: "One of the first things you ask yourself: 'Will there be a difference in [effect] between Berlin Wall and a piece of concrete from your own garage wall?' Emotionally you are inclined to say: 'Yes, of course', but rationally you may have your doubts."

Elaine Lewis: "When you're desperate, and you've seemingly tried everything, there's your own body to make remedies from: your discharges, your urine, your blood–you're never really without remedies, are you?"

I'm baffled at how one can acknowledge that pathogens cause illness and still support homeopathy. That's some 12C cognitive dissonance...
