I'm not sure what's exactly up with American but he has dropped some really big hints that he shouldn't be taken at face value. For example, I'm pretty sure his avatar is of the title character from the movie
American Psycho, I haven't seen the movie but heres a short review/summary:
Patrick Bateman is a homicidal maniac working on the New York stock exchange. His reasons for killing are debatable, such as extreme envy of fellow co-workers, material obsession, pure hatred or simply no other reason than complete insanity. His lunacy escalates throughout the film, killing at least 20 people in the process, including models, homeless people, co-workers, friends, and anyone else who stands in his way, be it rage, jealousy, or something else. The only person who he seems to sympathise with is his secretary, Jean, who eventually he can't help but have a desire to murder her.
Many times, Patrick can't tell whether these events are real, or simply part of a psychotic delusion brought on by his problems.

At the very least Ameircan is someone poking fun at his own mental state with that Avatar choice, but something that review didn't point out is that apparently the movie is considered a parody/satire, something highlighted in this first paragraph of
another review:
Satire: n. a literary genre in which ridicule is thrown upon something by stressing its worst features, often by the use of irony, thus assuming or affirming a norm by which aberrations are judged. You must appreciate the definition of a satire if you truly want to experience this film on the level upon which it is presented. Many satirical cinematic presentations have flopped, others flourished. This one...works!
American's fondness for deceptive trolling is clearly stated in the

Often mistaken for a comedian, he was a performance/character artist. He did unconventional bits, but what the audience didn't know was that even his "alternative style" was something of a dupe intended to get a rouse and leave them more confused than anything else, sometimes laughing, angry, disgusted, but always very confused.
He was the first troll.
(As a side note- he was also a moon-landing doubter. But given his eccentric ways, I woud bet even that was some sort of joke.)
There is some serious depth to what he's doing in that post IMHO. Other times his humor is just over the top, while it's easy to be an obnoxiuos troll American has made me laugh so hard it's impossible for me to hate him even when I think he's just being a jerk. One of his funniest posts:

I reviewed a copy of The Gay Agenda one summer at community college when I got stuck with a metrosexual roommate named Ben. As soon as I moved in, he seemed like a pansie to me (I'm normal), and I became suspicious that he was a pot smoker, because the gays do a lot of that. So while he was at class one morning, I rifled through his desk drawer intending to find evidence to turn him in (I had a right to do that because he had borrowed my cigarette lighter (probably to smoke pot with it) and never gave it back to me). I didn't find any illegal items, but tucked way in the back I came across a small book entitled "THE GAY AGENDA" written in bold purple letters across the front. There was no author or publisher listed, nor any identifying marks of its orgin. The pages were made of hemp, I think.
I can't even describe what I read in The Gay Agenda. I mean, I could tell you, but I'd be banned because the moderators are homophobes and don't want me talking about that stuff. I only got to see a few pages, because at that moment Ben's sister arrived and invited herself in to meet me and say hi (she was staying over, for like a weekend, 'cause she was thinking of applying to a class and wanted to see what the school was like).
I never asked Ben about his book. Mostly I avoided him all summer and hung out with some exchange students I met from China or Japan (I never figured out which country exactly... all Asian countries look alike on a map).
If you ever get stuck with a roommate that looks and acts like Moby- watch out! He may be gay.
