Is "American" Sincere?

It's nice to see that a low-wattage loser like "American" can have sycophants.

Assuming I am correct in my assessment of the poster that is 'American', you are the sycophant.

And you're right, it is nice. There is nothing more cute than seeing a puppy bark at his reflection in the mirror.

Just so you know, I bark at mirrors as well, as American so aptly pointed out between this post and yours.

As soon as a loser schmuck (or his trained monkey) is discovered: Oh, I'm not serious. The joke's on you for noticing.

"Yap, yap", into the mirror went the puppy.

It's fun, no?

Certainly cute.

This is code for something. A hint is 'don't ask, don't tell."

Is this (yet another) reference to your homophobia?

I have a bit of that as well. But only a bit. Assuming the act is between two b-u-t-full women, It only scares me on a performance level (1 divided by 2 is 1/2).

In my opinion, that statement could NOT be more UNtrue.

I'll give it a shot: "It would seem that American has done more to turn people away from the Right point-of-view than anyone else on these forums, and I am certain he wears pink pajamas while dancing with invisible elephants on Pluto."

There. That was likely more untrue.

At least not for those that have a rational basis for their 'on-the-Right' point-of-view.

OK...with that qualifier, I'm much closer to fully agreeing with you.

Those that don't have a rational basis shouldn't have such views as they too are just barking at the mirror that American puts in front of them.

Certainly. And, as I think you'd agree, based on a previous post of yours, they're not as entertaining as American. :)

So very true. When is the last time you heard a conservative/right leaning poster say "Good point American."

American is amusing for sure. I found Jedi Knight amusing as well, but at least American has the deceny to restrict his nonsense to a short paragraph or two.

JREF Forum is a great equalizer. We can come here and post or respond to various posts. Notwithstanding the mods we're all equal (a la Animal Farm).

Whether or not American is sincere is moot. In my humble opine he is as relevent as Rush Limbaugh and myself.

I'm not sure what's exactly up with American but he has dropped some really big hints that he shouldn't be taken at face value. For example, I'm pretty sure his avatar is of the title character from the movie American Psycho, I haven't seen the movie but heres a short review/summary:

Patrick Bateman is a homicidal maniac working on the New York stock exchange. His reasons for killing are debatable, such as extreme envy of fellow co-workers, material obsession, pure hatred or simply no other reason than complete insanity. His lunacy escalates throughout the film, killing at least 20 people in the process, including models, homeless people, co-workers, friends, and anyone else who stands in his way, be it rage, jealousy, or something else. The only person who he seems to sympathise with is his secretary, Jean, who eventually he can't help but have a desire to murder her. Many times, Patrick can't tell whether these events are real, or simply part of a psychotic delusion brought on by his problems.

At the very least Ameircan is someone poking fun at his own mental state with that Avatar choice, but something that review didn't point out is that apparently the movie is considered a parody/satire, something highlighted in this first paragraph of another review:

Satire: n. a literary genre in which ridicule is thrown upon something by stressing its worst features, often by the use of irony, thus assuming or affirming a norm by which aberrations are judged. You must appreciate the definition of a satire if you truly want to experience this film on the level upon which it is presented. Many satirical cinematic presentations have flopped, others flourished. This one...works!

American's fondness for deceptive trolling is clearly stated in the http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40498&highlight=andy
]"Andy Kaufman is Alive"[/url] thread where he praises/defends Kaufman.

Often mistaken for a comedian, he was a performance/character artist. He did unconventional bits, but what the audience didn't know was that even his "alternative style" was something of a dupe intended to get a rouse and leave them more confused than anything else, sometimes laughing, angry, disgusted, but always very confused.

He was the first troll.

(As a side note- he was also a moon-landing doubter. But given his eccentric ways, I woud bet even that was some sort of joke.)
There is some serious depth to what he's doing in that post IMHO. Other times his humor is just over the top, while it's easy to be an obnoxiuos troll American has made me laugh so hard it's impossible for me to hate him even when I think he's just being a jerk. One of his funniest posts:

What is The Gay Agenda?
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%22the+gay+agenda%22

I reviewed a copy of The Gay Agenda one summer at community college when I got stuck with a metrosexual roommate named Ben. As soon as I moved in, he seemed like a pansie to me (I'm normal), and I became suspicious that he was a pot smoker, because the gays do a lot of that. So while he was at class one morning, I rifled through his desk drawer intending to find evidence to turn him in (I had a right to do that because he had borrowed my cigarette lighter (probably to smoke pot with it) and never gave it back to me). I didn't find any illegal items, but tucked way in the back I came across a small book entitled "THE GAY AGENDA" written in bold purple letters across the front. There was no author or publisher listed, nor any identifying marks of its orgin. The pages were made of hemp, I think.

I can't even describe what I read in The Gay Agenda. I mean, I could tell you, but I'd be banned because the moderators are homophobes and don't want me talking about that stuff. I only got to see a few pages, because at that moment Ben's sister arrived and invited herself in to meet me and say hi (she was staying over, for like a weekend, 'cause she was thinking of applying to a class and wanted to see what the school was like).

I never asked Ben about his book. Mostly I avoided him all summer and hung out with some exchange students I met from China or Japan (I never figured out which country exactly... all Asian countries look alike on a map).

If you ever get stuck with a roommate that looks and acts like Moby- watch out! He may be gay.
"(I'm normal)"

In my opinion, no.

I believe Jedi Knight = Ghengis Pawn = American.

One troll, many names.

Having contended a good deal with Jedi and American in the past, I am fairly sure they are different.

Not sure about GP...

I too am seeing the signs that American is yanking our chain... but also I almost see that guy in the "mannequin" movie that kept saying, "You took me serious?!"--he was still a jerk :P

I thought so about American, but I may be catching on that he is something more interesting than a crazed troll who likes to bait liberals. I don't think JK was more than that.

It's hard to pick up tone over text, it may be he is satire. I will try reading his posts and imagining them in the voice of the "That's Gay" guy in "South Park". Maybe I'll get it then...

F-ck. They're on to me.

Nie, if you're reading this- I'll see you in the bunker. You know the coordinates.

Lunatic fringe forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:D As I said, "winking."

For those who think that American, Jedi Knight, and GP were each 'the real deal' - folks who actually believed what they believed, I understand not thinking they are the same person.

For those (like me) who think that they are just trolls putting on a persona, I don't understand why you dismiss the idea that a troll can put on different personas.

Doghouse says:

Also, American was one of the very first people to register on the boards, and then didn't even post for nearly a year. It doesn't seem like typical Jedi Knight behavior.

Please try to picture a troll registering several IDs, then using one to troll with, and not using the other at all because he's having so much fun trolling.

I've got all three of them ignored, though, so I'm sure the rest of you know them better than I do.

Jedi Knight, Franko, Nie Trink Wasser, Ghenghis Pawn, shanek, UserGoogol, Skeptic, and a_unique_person are all clearly the same person. And that person is James Randi.

Great question.

I don't know, I really don't know.

I guess I want people to behave in a certain way and when they don't it pisses me off. Too bad so sad. This is a public forum and as long as they don't violate the rules then they can play games or simply be bizzare. Of course who am I to decide what is bizzare or not. I guess I'll just have to deal with it.

Don't ruin it!

MAN I love American. I never laugh so hard as when I read his stuff.

I do think he's having us all on, but there's a beauty and elegance to his posts.

Real or no, American's posts often accurately reflect a very real segment of society. I see him as more like a jref service than a troll.

There's a guy I work with who does a very straight "American", and holds almost identical opinions.

How to make an American:

Ingredients:

5 parts ex-Navy
5 parts non voting Republican
10 parts active NRA membership
3 parts non attending Mormon
6 parts Utah
4 parts Arizona
3 parts anti Microsoft network administrator
4 parts paranoid
1 part hound dog

300 parts beer

Mix each part separately with 10 parts beer, drink while watching Fox news.
Drink remaining beer when complete. Hunt!

I've been trying to get my brain around this for a while now, and maybe a few of you (including the subject of this thread) might have some insight.

Either the guy is just an over-the-top right winger, or a Eurocentric troll being facetious to try and make a point.

No offense intended here, I just feel like I missed a memo or something.

Funny you should mention that!

I have been thinking for the past few weeks that his posts are getting rather moderate and he does not seem to be taking himself quite so seriously. However, I still think that he has a good bit to answer for so I am still not ready to accept that he has made a real turn for the better.
