The best irony for me is that there's nothing in atheism that says you shouldn't shout about it as loudly as you can, whereas I'm sure Jesus said something about believers keeping their religion private. So they're not just hypocrites, they're unfaithful hypocrites.

However, atheist" can fall to a similar hypocritical trap if they believe that religious views should not be spoken about, and then go and preach about atheism. Note that this does not have to happen, since, as you say, atheism itself doesn't give any such stipulations (indeed, "atheism" doesn't really give much stipulation at all other than to simply not have a belief in deities.). But if the atheism is combined with this belief, then similar hypocrisy may occur.

I don't think I've encountered any atheists who think religious views shouldn't be spoken about. I think most of us are more of the "Please keep it in the proper place, not yelling about it on the high street or knocking on my door to bang on about it" attitude.

They're not allowed to challenge their own religion, so having a "outsider" do it just that much more aggravating.
