iPad Reactions

Interestingly a relative said the other day that she thought the iPad looked really good and was wondering if she should get one. Sadly had to tell her no. And the reason for that is that she does not have a computer or even an internet connection, from all the reports on TV and the advertisements she thought that the iPad was a "real computer" (to use her words) not just an "add on".

I know I would find this out if I went to an Apple store, but if I purchased a 3G version, it also works with my home wifi right?

Thanks, because I have a good home wireless system which all the kids use with their laptops, and which I would use if I purchased an ipad, but would also probably purchase a low-level plan to use when away from home.

I was listening to a radio show where the DJ was talking up his iPad and how much he loved it and how it was so intuitive and easy to use that it is the only computer many casual users would ever need.

And I just felt like screaming at the radio..."But how are they going to set it up without a real computer and iTunes!"

Apple are not going to be pleased, first the new iPhone is leaked and now the iPad with "multitasking" OS has been leaked:

I'm going to wait a little longer. Apparently next year there is going to be a limited version with Windows ME (and Office "Assistant " Clippit ) then all you Mac Fanboyz out there will be real jealous.:D

Wait, there's no way to have the iPad set up to run without an iTunes sync? Seriously?

It's just like with the iPhone and iPod, iTunes is the program used to sync it (and back it up) with your computer, transfer music, photos, apps, etc.

You can buy stuff from the iPad and download the app, movie, book or music directly to it and when you plug it into the computer it will also add it to your computer.

But if you buy an iPad and don't have a computer running iTunes you have a brick. eta: well you need it for the initial set up so I guess you could use it after that without iTunes but you wouldn't be able to back it up or transfer music, movies etc. from your computer to the iPad.

Nothing new though. This is what Apple has been doing for close to ten years now with their mobile devices.

Yeah, I have an iTouch, but I synced it for the iPod music anyway. I just never thought about what I would have done if I hadn't wanted to sync music. That would have ticked me off.

Remember seeing that on OCAU a while ago now, runs win95 like a stuck pig but the fact they've got it to run at all is nothing short of astonishing.

I must say I'm horribly tempted to get a 3g ipad, but as I have a great laptop and bitching desktop/htpc setup I'm unsure about where I'd use it and why...

My friend is considering an iPad and I asked him exactly what he'd use it for. He said "the internet".

How appropriate that it's frozen on the startup screen, just as we fondly recall Win '95.

One of the owners of the company I work for got an iPad 2 and I helped him set it up. He took it on a trip overseas and seemed pretty pleased with it. He showed me a video he took at the factory and it looked very nice, better than my iPod Touch 4G turns out.

Other than the cameras I don't see much noticeable difference between my original iPad and the new one. The magnetic cover is kind of cool but I don't see it as any more or less convenient than the portfolio case I use. I don't think he is using it for anything that would require the extra processing power.

Screw all those. I want a TRANSFORMER. Too bad the things are impossible to find. Eh I'll still probably wait a year when tablets have quad core cpus and can be controlled with your brain.

One of my colleagues got a Galaxy pad, another one an iPad.
Now the former is using his eMachines netbook and the latter got a MacBook Air.
Too much money, maybe.

I gots an iPad2 yesterday! :)

It connected to our home wifi upon setup, while connected to my PC, without needing the password.

How will it connect to other wifis? Automatically, or do I need to find the settings somewhere? I know I'll need to enter other passwords if necessary, but will the iPad prompt me for them automatically?

1) You should set up encryption and a password for your home wifi. In fact, in the US and most European countries that is required by law. Or do you mean the iPad grabbed the password from the sync?

2) The iPad will prompt you for the password if it's the first time that particular network is encountered. The iPad remembers the password, so in the future it will reconnect automatically. You can -- sometimes have to -- go to Settings/Wi-Fi and select the network you want to connect to. In rare cases (my old university network needed that), you have to select "Other" in the network selection list, and enter the network name and its encryption method my hand. Again, that is something you usually have to do only once. If the iPad still doesn't like to connect, it helps to turn it off and on again (off with pressing and holding the sleep/wake button, on the top left, top being the end with the camera and the headphone jack. Hold until the red slide to off button appears, and slide. Then turning back on by holding the sleep/wake button again until the Apple logo appears). Some networks where this is needed very frequently are the networks of the Panera Bread chain.
