iPad Reactions

Expect Kindle to drop in price. Significantly.
That will be the real success of the iPad. :)

Really, the thing has no market outside of hardcore fanboys and people who don't realize that netbooks exist. No multitasking, no phone, no camera, closed network for apps (assuming it's like the iPhone), no real keyboard that folds up to cover the screen, no flash support.

It might as well be this...

Not a "computer" though. They should have dumped the "productivity apps" part of the demo and left it as a fun device.

That really depends on how you define a computer. I will admit that it is not intended as a general purpose information processing device. It's a fancy network terminal, and the general model of operation is based on that premise.

And yet that doesn't stop people like PZ Myers from acting like its the technological equivalent of the second coming of Christ. Either that or he was being sarcastic. I hope he was being sarcastic. Please let him be sarcastic.

I've never understood the appeal of netbooks.

Neither, it appears, does Apple.

They're cheap-- incredibly cheap if you get them through a data plan on a phone carrier-- and they're essentially like having a mini-desktop that is easy to carry and doesn't take up too much space. Much like the consideration that went into the iPad, it doesn't have to be fully-powered like a desktop, because it tends to be treated differently in use. If they wanted power they'd get a bigger notebook, or if it didn't need to be mobile they would just use a desktop.

It's not complicated. It's for very many similar reasons that the iPhone OS won out with smart phones over its predecessors-- simpler, not as versatile, but good for what it does, and what it does is what many people want.

Um... 'cause they're charging 500 bucks for the entry-level model?

Yea, but you have to keep in mind the mac coolness surcharge. Everyone knows you paid twice what a competitive device would cost, so you must be cool.

It certainly seems like you get a lot more for your money than with a Kindle.

As long as you have at least twice as much money to start with. If you only have say $300 a you can get a lot more out of a kindle or nook than the IPad.

I understand that.

But what does this device do that a Touch, or an iPhone, or a laptop doesn't already do?

What I'm seeing is that it's an eBook reader in a format that's not so friendly to reading eBooks (there's a reason devices like the Kindle use e-ink), with the functionality of an iPod.

And come on.... Even Steve Jobs talked about the "magical" and "revolutionary" device we were to see. Where was it? Where was this revolutionary device?

Like an MP3 palyer was a revolutionary device when the IPOD came out. It is them branding cool again.

And as long as you don't mind trying to read a book while holding something big and heavy. A pound-and-a-half in that shape is no joke when you're holding it up to read for a couple hours. It's also not nearly as easy to tote while out and about. Even the Kindle and Nook are a tad bigger than I'd prefer; I'm hoping that the next generation (or at least the one after) can fix this with an e-ink or OLED touchscreen so that the device only needs to be as tall and wide as the screen itself.

I get that Apple sees this as an up-and-coming market into which they want to tap, but this isn't going to cut it now that other, better readers have made the rounds.

I find my nook is easier to read than a hardcover book or large format paperback. So smaller might be nice, but I don't think it is necessary. In fact I think it is easier to curl up with than a hardcover as turning pages is easier.

True it is not a reader.

I agree. When I said that I felt like the Nook and Kindle were still a little bit big, I was mainly referring to portability. The reading itself is good.

I would wonder how much smaller you could make one, I wouldn't like a smaller screen. So you would have to move all the interface onto the side/back. Seems awkward.
