iPad Reactions

My iPhone acts as a perfectly adequate phone.

Right. The biggest problem with the iPhone in the US is the exclusivity contract with AT&T. Ask anyone who has the iPhone outside of the US, where they can likely have a choice of a better carrier, and the reports are usually splendid. Further, the cellular networks in Europe and other parts of the world often foster much more rich and inviting phone availability that the iPhone is just one of many stellar phone devices out there to choose from.

Awww, I can't let facts get in the way of a [barely] amusing quip. :D

Seriously, I'm not an Apple hater. I love my iPod Touch and I lust after the elegance of the iMac (if only it had the graphics power to push its huge number of pixels, I'd replace my PC in a minute).

The iPad, though, seems like a toy rather than something aimed at a specific need/desire. Even the MacBook Air seems sensible in comparison.

The more I think about this, the more it makes sense.

Seriously, just think about it. First rule of Apple products is that you NEVER buy v1.0.

And I'm already hearing rumors about the iPad v2.0. They say it will come in a "iPad Mini" version. It will fit in your pocket, have a camera, 3g, and will have phone functionality.

Seems to me a device in search of a purpose.

A solution in search of a problem.

Yeah, despite my optimistic review of the device based on specs and capabilities, I really do think that this might be the case with the iPad. The only way I can see this not happening is if someone (Apple or otherwise) comes out with some really nice apps that make this thing a significant draw-- at this point, the video and ebook shops on iTunes aren't going to suffice.

I used a Motion M1400 at work (construction, in the field) for several years and was very pleased with it.

I've had a Toshiba Portege M400 for several years, and I am very pleased with it.

(I am tempted to get the M750, this year. But, for some reason, it doesn't look like they're putting the 64-bit version of Windows 7 on it, yet. Only 32-bit. Even if you have over 3 GB of RAM on it.)

Before that was my old, trusty Portege 3500. It was also very nice, for its day. Except that it couldn't come with an optical drive. I kept it alive for a while, after its real usefulness faded, just as an extra toy to play with. But, it recently died. :(

I am so spoiled by the true power of real Tablet PCs, that Apple ain't gonna sell me on this iPad thing. But, I don't think it is competeing against real Tablet PCs. It's competing more against Kindles and Nooks. And in that market, I think it can claim some share.

Besides, as a software developer, I do need to have a real keyboard and a real OS on it.

I find the revelations about this device today pretty ridiculous. Apple products are notorious for leaving out logical features that people want. But with the iPad it's gone to a new level. No real OS. No expandable memory. No multitasking. No mini-displayport or mini-hdmi out. No built in camera. No usb port without an adapter. No elegant typing solution. No elegant way to play complex games. I was kind of interested in this before today. But now I really have no interest in this toy.

Also netbooks are great for productivity. As new generations come out they get better and better. Higher resolution screens, better form factor, better designed keyboard, faster processors, better graphics capabilities, more inputs and outputs, more hard drive space, and the list goes on. I have gotten "serious work" done on a netbook including using photoshop and flash as well as play games, watch movies, and play around with multiple OSes among other things. I don't know what kind of work an average user could not get done on a netbook unless you are editing avchd or doing cad work or something. And even that might be addressed with alienware's m11x.
I'm gonna have to jump back and correct you on some of this. I almost thought you were being sarcastic at one point. Who said apple leave out logical features people want? What kind of stuff do they leave out? I think Apple have put extraordinary amount of options, apps and features into their devices. That's one of the main reasons why they are doing so well.

And to say it hasn't got a real OS is just crazy. It looks to me like an ideal OS to work with. It looks simple, intuitive and pretty quick from what I've seen. Just like the iPhone.

The other things like no elegant typing solution, no complex games???? You should really look into these things first. Apart from that, it's fair to say it hasn't got a camara or expandable memory, but hang on. You wanna use that as a camera? No, you'll need a camera to do that.

In the keynote that's on apple's website now, you should be able to find what Steve Jobs said about netbooks. They're less good computer, and the iPad is a sollution to having something smaller than a laptop and not just being a bad laptop.

A real OS for a devices this size would at least have multitasking abilities. It boggles the mind why they wouldn't do this. Are they trying to make a crappy product? Want to surf the internet and IM at the same time. Well you're SOL. Why? Well... because Emperor Jobs said so.

The ironic thing about this is is that the iTampon is worse than a netbook in almost every single way, yet costs significantly more.

This is where I would say the design falls down compared to how Apple has decided to promote it. On a phone I can sort of understand that not having more than one application active at once makes sense, for instance the screen size means it would be impractical to have an IMS app and a browser up at the same time, but with a screen the size of the iPad that's not the case. And looking at recent data from how people use their current devices, such as netbooks "multi tasking" (as in the people multi-tasking) crops up time and time again, especially when browsing, they want to be able to knock out a quick message to their mates or be chatting with them in a chat-room as well as looking at the latest single to download.

First of all Apple is not claiming anywhere that the iPad is a "tablet computer". There's a very good reason for that - the iPad isn't a "tablet computer".

Second when seeing something like this one has to take into consideration the history of Apple product launches and what they subsequently did to the market.

Take the iPod. In the pre-iPod days mp3-players were... awkward. Along came the iPod and that market exploded.

Pre-iPhone the touch-phone market was dominated by early Windows Mobile.. Along came the iPhone and boom - the result was better touch phones for all (hello Android).

The iPad may be an iPod Touch XL but the real revolution here is the book store. That will be the driving force and - mark my words - that market will now explode.

And to all the whiners saying "It's too expensive. It doesn't do multitasking. Where's the camera?" I only have one thing to say: If it bothers you that much - don't buy it.

That may well turn out to be the case, personally I don't think it will be but we shall see. However that is not how Apple is promoting it, have a look at their website, the first message is:

The best way to experience the web, email, photos, and video. Hands down.

Imagine being able to page through websites, write an email, flick through photos, or watch a movie. All on a big, beautiful, Multi-Touch screen. With just the touch of a finger.

That is why I said that the apparent limitations of the device are in contradiction to their promotional campaign.

That's the JRDF (Jobs Reality Distortion Field) in action. You must be strong and resist.

On one hand I would love an iPad (that name is just not right) for watching movies on the go.

On the other I think Apple missed a great opportunity by not fitting the iPad with OSX. That would have sealed the deal for me. But iPhone OS? Meh...

Why would anybody want to read books on it? It has a bright glossy LCD screen. There is a reason that devices like the the Kindle use that e-ink stuff.

That was not my point. The iPad may very well be an inferior device for reading books. Nonetheless it is my opinion that the iPad (or more to the point, the iBookStore) will transform the ebook market. Just like the iPhone and iPod did for their respective markets.

Like it or not, something always happens when Apple enters a market. That's the revolution. Not the iPad itself - that's kind of meh.

Not always, Apple TV for example really hasn't caused any revolution.

I think part of the problem is that most people wanted pretty much a MacPad, and Jobs delivered an iPad. The prefix is very important in this case.

(me, I am still waiting for an iPod Touch with a camera and GPS)

I completely agree. Take out the iPhone OS and replace it with OSX. That would be a very nice device.
