iPad Reactions

How did you "save your PDFs from time to time"? Where to? What was your method that is not there anymore in iOS 8?

Are you asking me or anglolawyer?

I don't have any problem copying files. Of course I'm not using any Apple OS's.

That's why I find the entire topic fascinating. I can't fathom what the problem is.

I'm just listening in to learn.

Ahh, sorry. Thought it was anglolawyer posting ...

I probably spoke to soon. I just checked in iTunes 12, and while the books on my iPad are listed under the two "Books" entries in the "iPad" tab, there's no easy way to access them to copy somewhere else. Music, movies, TV shows and podcasts etc. are, of course, also there on iTunes itself. If you can find a, say, music track within iTunes, you can right-click on it, and copy it, or drag it somewhere (for instance, the iPad logo to copy to the iPad), or let it be shown in the Finder (Mac OS X's file handling tool) where it is on the hard drive. "Books" are not a separate category. They only show up in the "iPad" tab, and there they cannot be right-clicked.

Funny thing is, there are simply there on the hard drive in the same folder structure where all the other files managed by iTunes are. The path on Mac OS X is "~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/". In this folder, there are the sub folders "Music", "Movies", "TV Shows" etc., and also "Books".

Also, iBooks is not listed anymore in the "Apps" tab as an App that can share files via iTunes -- I'm pretty sure it was in earlier versions of iOS and/or iTunes.

You don't know what an old iPad is. Mine won't upgrade to 6.

Hmm, that sounds familiar . . . yep same here:

iPad Software Update said:
iOS 5.1.1
Your software is up to date.

That seems a tad misleading. Maybe "your software is as up to date as it can be on this old brick" would be more accurate.

Crashing on websites every few minutes keeps you from spending too much time on the web. It's a feature!

On the iPad 2 if I got, say, an email attachment I wanted to keep in iBook I touched that little symbol that looks like a square with an arrow coming out the top side. I would be offered various options, one of which was to open in iBooks. That has now gone. Maybe there is a setting I need to change, I dunno.

Not to be condescending, but is ibooks installed ? Because that symbol which looks like a square with an arrow coming out the top side still exists, and will let you open attachments with the appropriate program.

Yes. It's native to the iPad I think. Whatever. It's there, I assure you. I can only do three things with email attachments now: share with air drop, email and print. At least, that's what I thought until a second ago ..... I now see it depends on the attachment. The .docx I got the other day is restricted as above but it appears I can save PDFs to iBooks. Go figure.

iBooks isn't a .docx reader. Go figure.

If you want to read the .docx in iBooks, open it in Pages, then choose Export -> ePub.

Why don't you just flash the old ROM?

Oh. yeah.

:boxedin:
Because I'm not a computer programmer and I have no idea what you're talking about. Someone here told me to "root" my android tablet, and the instructions were like 10 pages long. Seriously - make fun of apple all you want, but it mostly does what I want. If not, I take it to the apple store and they fix it. Mostly.

With most of the common Android devices it is neither that complicated nor that difficult. Many can be rooted simply by loading one of several available apps and just running it.

Flashing a ROM is somewhat more involved, but it doesn't require mad programming skills. Most people can do it if they take the time to learn a little bit, and can follow simple directions.

I've done it many times on multiple devices (including a Nook Simple Touch, which definitely isn't mainstream). If I can do it it can't be that complicated.

The point I was making is that it isn't even an option for an Apple customer, adept or not.

And yes, I was making fun. In a friendly way. I hope the ":boxedin:" smiley made that apparent. It was supposed to, anyhow.

Ebay says:
Apple iPad 2 - 32GB - Wi-Fi 9.7in - Black - (MC770LL/A)
Trending at $212.45

so 175 is not a bad no-hassle deal.

Even better when you see Best Buy is offering $200.00, not $175. :) 175 is for the iPad Mini.

Plus no commission so almost identical to what eBay is trending at when that's taken into account.

Old iPads huh.

Well, instead of $200 they will give you $62.00 for a first gen 16 GB model in good condition.

Which sucks.

I traded a first gen last holiday season to Target for a $200 gift card. Glad I got rid of it when I did.

Yeah, my first gen 64 gig is only worth $75. I missed that Target deal, too.

No problem. I don't mind the poking fun. Seems like android versus Apple is a thing on the Internet. However, don't assume that folks have the same computer acumen that you do. My IQ is at the Mensa level but I have absolutely no idea what "root" even means. I really just use computing devices the way they are designed. Call me a simpleton.
