Like the Nexus 9 announcement it leaves me wondering why I should upgrade, which considering all I usually need to see is a "NEW!" sticker as a reason to upgrade technology it is a strange sensation. Is this what you normal folk feel when a new piece of technology appears?

Well...maybe you shouldn't upgrade.

I'll be ordering my upgrade tomorrow, but my iPad is years old, and it is showing it's age. It's kinda choking on newer apps, slowing down, and so on. And really, I knew this would happen when I bought the first iPad, so I can't claim to be upset by this. And it'll be nice to have both the tablet and the phone recharging via Lightningbolt or Thundercat or whatever the port is called.

We're getting to the point where these are like computers - you may wish to upgrade once every few years, but you won't unlock anything amazing by doing so. It's faster, it has some additional conveniences, but in the end it's the same as what you're used to.

If you upgrade an old iPad from OS 7 to OS 8 you will regret it. It really screwed mine. I bought a new one.

Honestly, that upgrade screwed up my iPhone 5S royally - as in, it resets once every few minutes. I didn't dare to update my iPad after that - and luckily, I have Skype, so I can still make and receive calls.

But yeah, that's a real problem for me.

ETA: I currently have a 32GB Ipad 2, or some such. I expect to buy the iPad Air 2, 64GB. I have no significant worries here.

That's the downside to dealing with Apple. In the vast majority of cases, they do well. But when they don't, you're screwed.

Regardless, I already ordered a new Mac Mini, to replace my 2009 version. And I'll likely be ordering a replacement for my iPad soon.
 
I hated the loss of Camera Roll without any way to revert the change, was I the only one? I thought you could already store you photos in the Cloud.

You guys don't know what an old iPad is. Mine won't upgrade to 8. But, my laptop is even older, so I think I'm going to upgrade that first and then see if I even need an ipad after I've got the MacBook Air. We'll see.

BTW, they aren't going to update the MacBook line in the next couple of weeks, are they? I'd hate to buy right before the upgrade cycle . . .

Strange. I have an old iPad 2. Runs iOS 8 just fine, except for a few lags here and there (some of which are caused by apps). Just installed 8.1, but did not do much checking how much of the little problems I encounter are fixed.

A couple of the latest updates did not run through smoothly, though. Essentially pushed the iPad into an endless cycle when I tried updates over the air. But nothing that I couldn't fix quite easily with restoring and applying updates over USB cable connecting to iTunes. Didn't loose any data except the RSS feeds in my favorite reader.

I don't suppose you know how I might transfer the stuff I have in iBooks from the old iPad2 to the current iPad Air? If so, please assume I am an idiot for all expository purposes.

ETA all I have there are PDFs I have saved from to time to time. No books. Btw. the method I used for saving no longer seems to be available in OS 8. which is dashed inconvenient.

I'm really confused. Which method have you used? Saved to where?

I have always maintained complete backups of the iPad on my computer via iTunes. Within iTunes, the contents of iBook show up under "Books" in the "iPad" tab, and that hasn't changed in the last update rounds. The iPad can backup wirelessly via WiFi, though that has not been reliable for me recently (the iPad does not show up in iTunes, and I need to restart iTunes and/or the iPad to get it back. But since I have the iPad always with me, even when I'm at the Mac, it's usually much easier to use the USB cable from time to time. In particular before applying updates...)

That's the surefire way to backup books (using the Mac/PC with iTunes as a hub. Within iTunes, you can handle the PDFs any way you like -- copy them to the hard drive, or move them to another device).

Have you used iCloud? Wisely, I have not relied on iCloud for any backup service. Just as a convenient way to copy files. Always kept a safe copy on my Mac. Now, the last weekend with the updates to iOS 8.1 and Yosemite, the iCloud service has changed. The files I kept on there were not accessible for a day or so. They finally showed up, though sometimes the syncing was slow. I just assume that Apple's servers were a bit busy... :)

Now, I have a Mac, but I don't think that should matter.

As mentioned, I had to restore the iPad last week with the update to 8.0.2 (I think). Restored from my iTunes backup. No changes in my iBooks library as far as I can see.

ETA: I'm not sure what happens when you use an up-to-date iTunes with an older iOS version on the iPad. Never done that myself. All was always the latest version. Apple said the iPad 2 is compatible with iOS8, and as far as my experience went, they weren't lying.

This is fascinating.

Why isn't copying files just copying files? LAN, FTP, email, sneakernet, etc.? Is it some sort of special Apple problem? Are the .pdf's copy protected somehow?

How did you "save your PDFs from time to time"? Where to? What was your method that is not there anymore in iOS 8?
