With the country Progressing forward in the public opinion, and somewhat also in law, Indiana is taking the polar opposite approach. So far...:

1) School vouchers: ANY school; private and public, charter and non-charter, gets tax money. Teach Creationism? We don't care.

2) Abortions, not in one specific location at West Lafayette (mostly made of Purdue University), because their hall ways aren't wide enough to dispense RU-486 pills.

3) Guns not just allowed, but mandated at all public schools. Because every small-government individual wants an armed member of the government at their child's re-education location.

4) Since not enough guns are made in Indiana, lets make it so that more of them more here to make more of them. We love guns. Not so much enforcement of laws.

5) Unions. Whatever. What have they ever done for us (other than 40h work week, holidays, yadda yadda).

6) Footage "embarassing" factory farms? Criminal! Yeah, trespassing too, but more specifically "photographing or filming at a farm and then distributing the content with the intent of defaming or harming the farm", even more time in the slammer.

7) Photo ID for elections (ancient history by now, but whatever).

How did the cranks get so much power?

I have no idea. I think it was a perfect storm kind of scenario of urban sprawl, redistricting, and such. Each of our branches of government is solidly Republican. Not an opposing voice to derail any of it.

Indiana is awesome. I'm going there tomorrow to do some shooting. $4 all day at a range run by the state DNR, they even have free clay pigeon throwers.

And cheap gas and cheap cigarettes and low sales taxes! Not a smoker though.

And an unemployment rate a full percentage point lower than here in the Democratic People's Republic of Illinois. And their pols haven't underfunded state employee pensions by $100 billion like Illinois pols have. And a lower crime rate.

When do you move there?

I read the OP. What did you read?
Clearly you have Indiana and Illinois confused. The crooks run Illinois.

When do you move there?
Unfortunately I;m stuck here since Illinois policies have made us one of only 2 states whose property values are still falling. But my family owns property there, a house on a lake. So I can escape illinois every now and then.

It amuses me to no end that people think Indiana is some kind of GOP hellhole when right next door you have Exhibit A of Dems running a state into the ground. We're kicking the sick and elderly out of hospitals and nursing homes and cutting school funding and letting our roads and bridges crumble and not paying state vendors so the pension checks don't bounce.

Oh, and the SEC accused Illinois of fraud a few weeks ago for not disclosing the true state of our pensions to bond buyers.

I don't think I ever said anything about Illinois being a paradise. Only that based on the things cited in the OP, Indiana is run by cranks.

It amuses me to no end that you think Illinois is screwed up but you don't want to take the hit to move to a place you find "awesome".

D'oh!

I need to take out my contacts, eyes are tired.

I didn't see anyhting to that effect in the OP (aside from the stupid abortion thing). Just a state actually trying to improve the lives of their citizens, while here our pols screw the citizens to enrich themselves and their relatives and cronies.

What state do you live in? No doubt it's the best one.

Missouri & no... No its not, but at the moment, the good outweighs the bad. Having said that, if I ever feel the Dems ( or more likely the Reps) are "running the state into the ground" We'd be moving to the proverbial greener pastures.

Hey, give Republicans credit. Ryan corrupted just as well as any Democrat.

I've noticed a big trend in favouring Wisconsin in my area for "grass is greener". I'll have to compare the three States.

I don't think this is a fair argument. Voting with your feet and moving is quite difficult, even within the same State.

Ignorance benefits the right-wing terrorists and the voters they scare.

By any objective standard, Illinois is swirling the drain. Worst credit rating of any state. Run by family dynasties. An AG who says it's not her job to investigate corruption. Our last 2 governors in prison... oops Ryan just got out, so only 1 now.
