Merged Independent Moderate Conservative candidate? / Evan McMullin (who?)

True Conservatism was rejected big-time by Republican primary voters. Trump carried the Evangelical vote, so those people can and should be ignored forever. So what is the point?

This is even more lame than William "I am wrong about everything" Kristol's guy what's-his-name. No one had heard of that guy either, but at least at that point he had a mathematical chance at getting on enough state ballots to reach 270 electoral votes.

Is this even feasible this late in the game? What is the barrier for getting on the ballot in enough states to even make a go at this?

Already too late to get on the ballot in many states.

Obviously too late to be anything more than a protest candidate. One that nevertheless gives a certain kind of Republican someone they can vote for and "remain pure". Enough to make a practical difference? Possibly??? If he can prevent Trump from winning Utah's electoral votes maybe. In other states where the margin is close, if he can draw even 1% of the vote it might make a difference.

He doesn't even need to get on ballots in many states to prevent Donald from winning (assuming that people vote for him). Not that this is necessary to prevent Donald from winning.

It doesn't matter what "the courts" say. Local governments control local election law and he misses most of the deadlines this month. He has literally no chance of being elected.

The nimrods in Utah are so special that they need a very special pure candidate to beat Trump. God forbid they just go vote for Hillary!, Johnson or Stein. Hell, there are probably a couple of other fringe guys on the ballot, maybe even one ideologically pure enough for Mormons. Idiots.

Eta- apparently no other fringe candidates are on the Utah ballot. Deadline for parties to certify their candidate in Utah is Augist 31.

And those laws can be challenged in court. If he had broad support he likely could get on enough states. He is unlikely to get that level of support though.

For the record, I think this seems like a reasonable reaction to Trump, but why wouldn't you find someone with a bit more name recognition to tempt more GOP'ers away?

(This is all assuming he can get on enough ballots at all)

Trump is depending on the Know-Nothing demographic.

The less someone knows, the more they're likely to vote for The Donald.

On what basis ? Because Trump ?

On the basis that they are an undue burden to third party and independent candidates.

Look at what Perot did in 92 to get on the ballots when he reentered the race in october. The courts ruled that he had the support to be on the ballot.

No he likely could not. You are wrong.

ETA - I just saw the reference to Ross Perot in 1992. He got the signatures as part of the "draft Perot" effort before he exited the campaign. Those efforts were still valid in October. He got on the ballot state by state just like any other independent or third party candidate. It's too late for someone to do this for the November Presidential election. He doesn't even have a running mate so that rules out even petitioning for access in around 25 states until he names one.

I thought he was on the ballots due to his campaigning prior to dropping out. I don't recall him having to resort to the courts to get on any ballots. Maybe there were one or two, but anyone joining the race now would have to go to court in about half the states to get on every ballot like Perot did.

I was busy getting drunk at the time, though. So, I'm open to correction.
