BREAKING: Republican Party Floored As Romney Backers Fund New Independent Presidential Candidate

In a surprise move to obstruct the ascendancy of the Republican nominee, Donald Trump. The #NeverTrump movement has forwarded Evan McMullin, the chief policy director for Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, as a candidate in the race.

McMullin is launching his candidacy as an alternative for discontented conservative Republicans who simply cannot bring themselves to vote for Donald Trump. He’s also bringing big Republican guns to the fight.

Is this even feasible this late in the game? What is the barrier for getting on the ballot in enough states to even make a go at this?
 
For the record, I think this seems like a reasonable reaction to Trump, but why wouldn't you find someone with a bit more name recognition to tempt more GOP'ers away?

(This is all assuming he can get on enough ballots at all)
 
At his point, with less than three months until the election, I think the GOP focus has to be Trump or nothing.

Because it is a spoiler campaign not designed to win, rather designed to make Trump lose. No big name wants to do this, as it would effectively ruin future hopes.
 
I'd love 'em to make a serious attempt at this. It will absolutely hand the election to Hillary. Split off some more GOP votes in OH, AZ, NV, GA, FL? Thank you very much.

There's also a good chance that it disheartens the party faithful. As much as us LOL Libruls like to characterize them as a bunch of dummies, they ain't. With Johnson going after GOP-Libertarians, Trump going for the racist xenophobes, and now someone to go after the studious conservatives, a lot of 'em may just stay home because it's obvious their state's going to split the red votes.

How long it will take the Donald to make a series stupid, horrible and quite counter-productive complaints about Evan McMullin?
 
The one thing this type of candidate does is that it makes it so fewer people select the "All republicans" option on the ballot. If people are voting for individuals instead of parties, it is more likely that they will cross party lines in other races, too.
 
I think its maybe a move to try and keep the senate in GOP hands. As it stands, many republicans will simply stay at home because they have no one to vote for in the presidential election. This might get more of them to the polls.

He still has time to get on the ballot in 24 states and in Washington, D.C., but the deadline to file in seven of those states is Wednesday. He will have to get thousands of signatures in each state by their respective deadlines to get on the ballots, which will require him to have an organized strategy on the ground. He would have to collect 5,000 signatures in Ohio, 5,000 in Virginia and 3,000 in New Hampshire, according to state election rules. Before California’s filing deadline this Friday, he would need to gather upwards of 150,000 signatures.

I agree.
If the Republicans can't find a way to get the rational members of their base to the polls, they face worse consequences than just losing the White House
 
Problem with McMuellan is that the role he wants to play has already been taken by Johnson.

Or write off the White House and focus at limiting the collaterial damage in Congress.
I actually wonder if the strategy behing the McMucellan bid is to assure that Trump loses;the thinking being that the party could recover fairly quickly from a Trump Loss,but Trump in the White House could be such a disaster that it might wreck the party for a long time to come.

It's more accepting that Donald is going to lose but having an actual conservative on the ballot might get voters that are staying home because of Donald to go vote and save at least the house and hopefully the senate.
 
He's going with the "True Conservative" platform.

Those who embrace the dignity and value of every human life from conception until death; who understand the crushing danger of our unsustainable national debt; who believe deference to our Constitution outweighs partisan political priorities are all looking for something better than the two major party candidates are offering. These foundational and time-tested principles transcend party and politics but sadly have no champion in this election. We must not abandon the fight for these values, for doing so will deprive future generations of Americans the bright future we want to give them.
