Incest in a lift

It was? Where on earth do you get that from?

Oh, and something else: prostitution was "legal and normal" in Germany for the last 800 years? Who knew?

Well, to be entirely fair, there was one regime in the 30's and first half of the 40's, of a dude with a Charlie Chaplin kinda moustache which condemned it, but I think we can agree that that's hardly the regime to take as an example of good morals and ethics :p

Before and after... let's put it like this: an empire where the emperor thanks a city IN WRITING for providing some 1500 prostitutes to a CHURCH congress... does that sound to you like a country which has a problem with prostitution? :p

And make no mistake, we're not exactly talking a secular city per se, as it was the seat of a bishop, and in the middle of a bishopric, and home to a lot of clergy, which played a part in why it was chosen for that council. Although the city itself was a Free Imperial City and answered only to the Emperor directly.

Also to put it in perspective, we're not talking about a huge city. Even in the 21'st century it barely has 80,000 inhabitants. In the 1400's even for a major city, providing some 1500 prostitutes would mean AT LEAST a tenth of the city's population :p

But generally, morals were actually a lot more relaxed in the high and late middle ages and afterwards than most people seem to assume. Only in the Victorian era and early 20'th century, people started getting their bloomers in a knot over who has sex with whom. What you'd consider hitting rock bottom for sexual morals nowadays, back then would have actually been tame. Brothels and prostitution were ubiquitous all over Europe, kings and clergy had mistresses sometimes even in court, and sired whole armies of bastards on top of that, etc.

Occasionally we even have such... funny twists of fashion like a mistress of a king of France in IIRC the 1600's who started coming into court in a dress which left one or both of her breasts uncovered. Yeah, imagine pulling that stunt in Congress nowadays :p Of course the French noble women showed what they think of that depravity by... also starting to come to the palace with their tits out in the open, or getting painted in such attire. Fast forward a century, and that fashion had by now spread to the lower classes too. First to prostitutes showing their assets, but in the end it kinda turned into a free for all tit show.

(And before getting excited at that thought, well, remember that there was no quality control. A grandma who, let's just say, by now had her navel between her nipples, was just as free to show her breasts as anyone else.)

I agree it's absurd for this to result in a sex offender registry, though technically it is an offense regarding sex. Maybe we need a new registry. An "actual rapist registry."

One of many reasons that the "sex offender registry" system is complete garbage. As it was sold to the electorate (at least here in the US), it was supposed to protect the community from predators. Instead, it's a public announcement and partial exile of people convicted of any "icky" crime, whether they're dangerous or not.

But....something most people FORGET.....is that Abraham was the BROTHER of Sarah....it was true....not just a pretence to fleece Pharaoh (Gen 12:13).

When they repeated the pimping ruse AGAIN with Abimelech (Gen 20:2) Abraham actually affirmed that she was truly his half-sister (Gen 20:12).

I got it from the Bible from the verse which I actually cited right at the end of the sentence right after the one you quoted.....see the yellow highlight above.

:big:

But.... I think I would put up with the occasional grandma whose display I neglected to avert for the plethora of more titillating ;) ones....no?

Hans- As I'm sure you know perfectly well, Germany has not existed for anything like 800 years. 140 is more like it.
But which "Germany" do you mean in this context?

ETA- Sorry, I see you already clarified this on page 2.

Oops, my apologies, I tend to conflate Scotland and Wales .

I'll blame it on my being an ignorant American™, rather than admit I'm just an idiot .

Just remember, The Welsh are sheep shaggers. The Scots are goat ****ers.

Or, of course, as the great philosopher Ron White once said, "once you've seen one woman naked, you...pretty much wanna see the rest of 'em naked." ;)

Well, I had already mentioned the Holy Roman Emperor in before, so at that point I was just giving a pointer to something already mentioned.

But basically it's not as much about states per se, as that we have a huge chunk of Europe where, even if the name of the empire they're part of may have changed a few time in the meantime, nevertheless had brothels all along. You can take a random city in there and see that it had a thriving prostitution business since the 1100's. Regardless of the changes in exactly which royal court it answered to.

And yet one never sees society there going, "ah, screw it, if we've been ok with prostitution for so long, we might as well start shagging our siblings too. C'mere sis." ;)

I think this may be the only messageboard where people can go from "siblings caught on tape having sex in an elevator" to mentioning the Holy Roman Emperor.

Considering that Pope Alexander had sex with his daughters and that Roman Emperor Claudius married his niece....well...it is not off topic after all.

Since neither popes nor Roman Emperors were the same thing as Holy Roman emperors, not really applicable. Also if you mean the Alexander who was a Borgia you can dismiss the story as propaganda, that family had lots of enemies. And Roman aristocracy was so intermarried and adoption-happy that it's not like anybody could avoid marrying a relation even if they tried.

Whoa! I know some think it's cruel but I checked the photos and the only question that came to mind was: Is Motherwell a secret Ferengi base?

With a little suntan (well, a lot) he'd make a perfect Ferengi. Maybe Paramount has a secret breeding program so they can save on the makeup and special effects?

"Incest is illegal in England and Wales. It is defined as sex, whether heterosexual or homosexual, between a person and their parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, sibling, half-sibling, uncle, aunt, nephew or niece. It is punishable with up to 14 years imprisonment."

Ah, my bad. I didn't read the story too thoroughly. I thought the scenario took place in the United States.

For our US friends, a lift is an elevator. No coffee involved?

I was taking part in a guided tour of Cardiff Castle. A group of Americans got tired of the staircases and asked where the elevators were.

I live a couple of miles from Motherwell, I doubt the Ferengi would make a base there. A brother and sister shagging in a train station lift probably wouldn't even make the top 20% of icky and/or depraved things that happen there on a weekly basis.

Well I don't imagine this level of discussion in the Motherwell Times, but I'd love it, if in court, their solicitor had opened the case for the defence with,

"Actually, this type of behaviour was good enough for Charlemagne..."

"Objection! My lord, this is pure speculation; there were no lifts in time of Charlemagne."
