If I remember my history correctly -- and it's been many long years -- the Articles of Confederation were much more Democratic with direct votes on almost everything, and the process quickly showed itself to be unworkable. That's why, in 1787, the Constitution was drafted to elect representatives to vote on legislation rather than a direct democracy.Ok. So to clarify -
Republic is just a form of government that has no monarch.
Democracy is a form of government in which the people elect their leadership.
The U.S. is a democratic republic.
The numbnuts who think "Republicans" are somehow closer to the idea of a Republic than the Democrats apparently have never heard of Whigs.
