I'm not sure the McCain campaign is quite slimy enough

For the record, I think Ayres is a self justifying POS and I would prefer that Obama not give him credibility by associating with him, although I am not at all sure how much of an association it is. That being said, I would feel far safer having Obama's finger on the button than I would Mccain's. I think Obama actually has some integrity and has some interest in telling the truth and have little doubt that McCain has virtually none of either.

This thread is quite interesting.

Obama supporters defending Ayers.

And I presume they would also defend Dohrn?

Depends on your definition of "defend."

A: He's a lying, stealing, racist!
B: What did he ever steal?
BAC: Sure, B, defend the lying racist!

Refer to post 83. And with respect to those of you fretting and hand wringing about my using the acronym MILF all I can say is, in the immortal words of that Simpson's character "Won't someone think of the children!!!"

I have to give props to McCain for not demogoguing Obama too much.

It is clear to me that McCain will almost certainly lose this election. But he can still keep his good name. Today (or whenever that was recorded) he actually defended Obama as a decent man, even though he was booed for it. That takes some character.

He gets props for doing the decent thing? And the cheers for his corrections were louder than the boos. Now, maybe that's because cheering is more politically correct, or because they came second, but whatever. There's also something slimy about the McCain-approved ads, sending out Palin to say Obama "pals around with terrorists" and then attempting to, in person, pretend he's above all of that crap when he's knee-deep in it. I still give him a better than 40% chance of winning becoming President.

But if you want to blow something out of proportion, being married to a person who, two years ago, was a of a group that advocates breaking US laws

This is not only false but a total distortion of truth. Todd Palin was NOT a member of the Alaska Independence Party (AIP) two years ago. In fact, he dropped his party membership in 2002 and has registered undeclared since then ... until joining the republican party after Palin was chosen as McCain's running mate. And from what is known, Todd never participated in any party activities other than attending a single convention they had in Wasilla ... a convention that I think nominated the sitting Lt Governor.

Furthermore, the platform of the AIP party (http://www.akip.org/ ) says NOTHING about seceding or breaking US laws. In fact, the top 2 items in their platform are these:

1) To effect full compliance with the constitutions of the United States of America and the State of Alaska

2) To support and defend States’ Rights, Individual Rights, Property Rights, and the Equal Footing Doctrine as guaranteed by the constitutions of the United States of America and the state of Alaska.

Their website also states that they believe "full compliance with the constitutions of the United States of America and the State of Alaska is necessary." Whereas Ayers and his wife are unrepentant terrorists.

is at least as much fodder for overacted outrage as being an acquaintence of a member of a group that broke US laws fourty years ago.

Correction ... a group that blew up bombs and killed people.

Whatever you think of Ayers, and however staunchly you resist believing that he has changed, there is simply no significant connection between him and Obama.

ROTFLOL!

Other than the fact that Obama:

- attended Columbia at the same time Ayers was on campus,

- lived in the same neighborhood as Ayers and Dohrn in Chicago during that time and then again later when he moved back to Chicago,

- was active in the school reform movement in Chicago at the same time as Ayers got into it (Obama worked in the Developing Communities Project ... DCP ... while Ayers organized the ABCs group of which DCP was a member),

- worked for the same law firm (Sidley and Austin) as Dohrn did during that time ... a law firm whose managing partner just happened to be a well known personal friend of Ayers' father,

- after graduating from Harvard, worked for the law firm Davis, Miner and Barnhill (note that Judson Miner was a personal friend and law school classmate of Dohrn, where they were both involved in anti-war activities),

- started his journey into politics at a meeting in home of Ayers and Dohrn (who were/are married),

- was identified as a "friend" of Ayers by Dr Quentin Young who attended that meeting,

- was likely picked to chair the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (CAC) by Ayers who initiated and obtained the first $50 million funding for the project,

- collaborated closely with Ayers (who was co-chair) in CAC over a 5 year period (raising another $60 million), eventually wasting over 100 million dollars on a left-leaning education reform experiment whose leadership admitted produced no noticeable improvement in student performance,

- reviewed a book written by Ayers' giving it a glowing recommendation,

- appeared with Ayers on numerous academic panels, including one organized by Michelle Obama to discuss Ayers' book.

- chose as his education advisor a woman (Gloria Ladson-Billings) who was president of the American Education Research Association (AERA) when she proposed a "reparations" approach to education that Ayers endorsed (and Ayers is not the Vice President-elect of AERA),

- served together on the board of directors of the Woods Fund in the late 90's and early 00's, which financed the hiring of Obama in 1985 by the Developing Communities Project,

- got an "official endorsement" from Ayers several times in his campaigns for political office,

- got endorsements from radical organizations, such as Movement for a Democratic Society (MDS), which have direct links (via it's members) to the 60's radical group, SDS, and it's terrorist offshoot, the Weather Underground, as well as Ayers and Dohrn,

- allowed a long time communist friend of Bill Ayers (from back in the days of SDS, Ayers school reform effort and now MDS), named Mike Klonsky, to run a blog on the official Obama campaign website (it's only shut down when this association is exposed).

No significant connection? Who are you kidding, Tricky?

CNN's fact check on "Is Obama 'palling around with terrorists'?":
Verdict: False. There is no indication that Ayers and Obama are now "palling around," or that they have had an ongoing relationship in the past three years. Also, there is nothing to suggest that Ayers is now involved in terrorist activity or that other Obama associates are.
Linky.

So Palin's words were false.

Remember, she said that Obama is "someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country."

That's certainly a false statement.

ETA: So the spin on this is so outrageous that Palin is suggesting that Obama's working on a non-profit to raise funds to improve public education is somehow like being a terrorist!

True. The props don't extend to Palin, who has been a demogogue. I just have a hard time seeing that the negativity orignates from McCain himself. There's a lot of pressure on him from republicans to "take the gloves off." I think that McCain himself knows deep down that it's unsavory, but he's under pressure to do this from his party. I think 40% is too high. I wouldn't accept less than 10-1 odds to bet on him myself.

McCain booed for calling for respect.

I almost started a threat about this but figured they were too similiar and just would have been merged anyways.

LAKEVILLE, Minn. - The anger is getting raw at Republican rallies and John McCain is acting to tamp it down. McCain was booed by his own supporters Friday when, in an abrupt switch from raising questions about Barack Obama's character, he described the Democrat as a "decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."

A sense of grievance spilling into rage has gripped some GOP events this week as McCain supporters see his presidential campaign lag against Obama. Some in the audience are making it personal, against the Democrat. Shouts of "traitor," "terrorist," "treason," "liar," and even "off with his head" have rung from the crowd at McCain and Sarah Palin rallies, and gone unchallenged by them.

Read Me

I think started to see the highly negative turn that his campaign was breeding. People are easily led into a view of Us-v-Them, which can easily create clannish type extremist actions. This fact is magnified when there is a sense of instability and fear. Palin's claims that Obama is a terrorist by association resonanted with this tendency. It's much easier to use prejudice and place blame on some "other", than to suggest that it may be our own actions which have caused problems.

This is much of the psychology that fuels many extremist groups and cults.

Rallies where people shout out to kill obama, that he's an "Arab", that he's a terrorist..., simply look way to similar to rallies of blossoming extremist movements. It's one thing to mudsling, it's another thing to fuel a hate movement.

It seems McCain has realized what his campaign was doing and is attempting to defuse it.

Correction ... a group that blew up bombs and killed people.

Is that right? There is a possibility that one police officer died by one of their bombs but I am sure I read somewhere the Black Liberation something or other actually claimed responsibility for that bomb. The Weathermens' most notable success on the fatality front was that they blew themselves up trying to make bombs. Their main claim to fame is that they managed to let so many bombs off without killing people. AQ they were not.

Yeah, I think that is correct. The only people they were ever shown to have killed was three of their own members. Of course, technically, that means they still "killed people". I guess that was BaC "parsing words like a Clinton".

Here's a suitably liberal source:

http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/weatherunderground/movement.html

And grab attention they did—in March 1970, just days after Bernardine Dohrn publicly announced a “declaration of war.” When an accidentally detonated bomb killed three Weathermen in the basement of a Manhattan townhouse, the group suddenly became the target of an FBI manhunt, and members were forced to go into hiding. The bomb had been intended to be set off at a dance at a local Army base.

Here's another liberal source:

http://www.boston.com/news/globe/ideas/articles/2003/10/19/return_of_the_weathermen/

Early in 1970, a group of Weathermen inadvertently blew up three of their members along with a townhouse on Eleventh Street in New York's Greenwich Village. The group was trying to build an anti-personnel bomb, in order to give Americans a taste of the kind of cruel weaponry their government was using in Vietnam.

And now for one that's not so quite liberal (and more honest in their presentation):

http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ODk2ZTRmZDIwNWEzOWE2MDNhMTQ0ZWYwYmRiNWZmNDM=

Three of his confederates, including his then girlfriend Diana Oughton, were accidentally killed when the explosive they were building to Ayers specifications (Ayers was a bomb designer) went off during construction. As noted in Ayers' Discover the Networks profile, the explosive had been a nail bomb. Back when Ayers was being more honest about his intentions, he admitted that the purpose of that bomb had been to murder United States soldiers:

That bomb had been intended for detonation at a dance that was to be attended by army soldiers at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Hundreds of lives could have been lost had the plan been successfully executed. Ayers attested that the bomb would have done serious damage, "tearing through windows and walls and, yes, people too."

In fact, Ayers was a founder of the Weatherman terror group and he defined its purpose as carrying out murder. Again, from Discover the Networks:

Characterizing Weatherman as "an American Red Army," Ayers summed up the organization's ideology as follows: "Kill all the rich people. Break up their cars and apartments. Bring the revolution home, Kill your parents."

Now he wants you to think they just wanted to break a few dishes.

And apparently so do you. Your spin in this matter says about you Nogbad.

:D

Your dishonest spin says a lot about you too, Ausmerican. Ayers built a NAIL BOMB. And admitted it's purpose was to kill 100s.

Folks, isn't it fascinating watching Obama supporters defend Ayers, Dohrn and now the Weatherman?

Make no mistake, Obama has the full support of former SDS and Weatherman members. Ask yourself why?

And despite the denials of the Obama supporters on this thread, it is more than apparent that Obama had a long and fruitful relationship with Ayers and Dohrn. Notice that NONE of them have even attempted to respond to my post to Tricky where I listed the numerous ways in which Obama, Ayers and his wife, Dohrn, were connected.

And let's set the record straight. Obama met them long before the time his campaign staff originally claimed (they said it was at the meeting in their home). And he was more than just a neighbor, which was the response that Obama gave George Stephanopoulus when he asked Obama about Ayers. Obama and his campaign staff were lying then, and I think they are still lying about the real relationship now. That's right, folks. We don't yet know the whole story. But look what we do know. It should disturb you. Especially when this is not the only radical, communist association and terrorist sympathizing organization Obama has supporting him.

How come Ayers isn't in prison? I mean, there may be some dispute about some of things surrounding Ayers, but he did help build a bomb that killed people, right?
