If Romney gets the nomination does Obama take the south?

As I will do in the southern state I vote in (not Mississippi). Of course Romney doesn't have the nom quite yet.

Now if we could get Hilary to challenge Obama for the dem nom!

AlBell, all I saw in your post was "nom nom nom" ;)

No, the south is the reddest of red areas. They might get North Carolina, but that's about it. The Dem's hope for a breakthrough is in the midwest.

There's a decent chance Obama will get Florida (again). But outside of FL and NC, not a snowball's chance in hell.

There was one recent poll in South Carolina that had Obama beating Romney, but I think it's probably a fluke. This is a state that has Jim DeMint as a senator after all, and he won re-election easily last time.

South Carolina: Romney vs. Obama

Obama could win in North Carolina again (he carried the state in 2008)

Virginia is close enough to be in play (Obama won there too in 2008).
Virginia: Romney vs. Obama

Georgia looks like a safe state for Romney:

If you count Florida as part of the South, it's a tossup:

It's election day 2012 in deep south Mississippi. You're a Republican and you have to choose between going to the polls to vote (where the choice is a Mormon and a black guy) or go bowling.

You go bowling.

In a feat that would have bewildered us only a generation ago a black man actually carries the state of Mississippi in a Presidential election.

So what do you think? Remotely possible?

White southerners hate Blacks more than they hate Mormons.

Florida is a major battlegorund state.

A lot of people have ghastly underwater mortgages and developers are sitting on unsold inventory that becomes less desireable by the day.

Mittens wants to speed up foreclosures on dream houses gone nightmarish.

A lot of the targetted homes belong to older people who thought that they were set for their few remaining years if they coulld just hold out to draw Social Security. They are going to find themselves with crappy credit and little chance of ever recovering.

This does not sound like a good strategy for Florida.

Romney wants to foreclose on homes and fire people. What an evil evil man.

You can start with Florida, North Carolina and Virginia, which Obama took last time. I think he's got an excellent chance to take Virginia and Florida again. If any other southern states come into play, it would probably be Georgia, and just that.

As for other states Obama could possibly add on to his 2008 wins, look to Arizona. Maybe Missouri.

As for Obama 2008 states that Romney could take away, New Hampshire and Indiana are most likely (in addition to FL, NC, VA). He could add to that with Iowa. Maybe Colorado. Maybe Ohio.

Romney might be able to recover some of those votes by getting a really whackdoodle evangelical running mate.

That strategy worked so well for McCain. . . .

Florida is not really "southern". The whole lower half (the most populous part) is composed mostly of rich Yankees who moved there to retire, plus Castro-hating Cuban exiles. It is a completely different culture from most of the former Confederate states.

Romney being a Mormon made him a non-candidate for me in 2008.

I'd vote for him now. Times change.
