It takes cargo cults as a metaphor. Going through the outward motions of effecting change, rather than understanding and doing the real work necessary to effect that change.

Blocking a freeway in Los Angeles to wave foreign flags and burn American flags in protest of ICE raids isn't really going to do anything to stop ICE from conducting raids, or anything to curtail the policy behind the raids. Calling for more of the same is a fairly naive proposal for rebellion against the new order.

We have a church pastor here in Portland who has affirmed that his church will continue to shelter illegal immigrants against ICE. This is performative rather than practical. Cargo cult activism. If Oregon wants to maintain its sanctuary policy in the face of armed federal opposition, Oregonians are going to have to get on board with armed state resistance. Marching in the streets won't cut it. Marching in the streets, by itself, has never cut it.

His followers want him to threaten and invade neighbouring countries. It's what fascist leaders do, after all. Orange Führer is following in the footsteps of Hitler and Mussolini. I wouldn't be surprised if he riled up gravy seals to hang out by the border and maybe incite incidents.

But you see a couple dozen photos of a crowd of people milling around, waving signs, and you think, these people have power. These people are taking action. These people are going to make a change.

So what? This situation is in its infancy, thus your failed attempt at analogy. Who might emerge as the next successful civil rights activist is unknown, but to suggest there are none, and to ridicule those making an attempt smacks of fear. What do you fear, edgelord?
