I just got polled by the NRA!

Did your read that pdf you linked to? Or did you just not expect anybody else to read it?

Here are the conclusions which the paper reached:

While U.N. bodies have adopted resolutions and a “firearms protocol,” these efforts
have focused on the availability of firearms manufactured and obtained illegally and on
the use or misuse of these firearms in the criminal arena, including for organized crime,
and/or to facilitate the spread of or prolongation of conflict. During meetings and
negotiations in U.N. bodies, U.S. representatives have focused on the need to combat
organized crime and to reduce out-of-control violence and conflict by limiting the
availability of firearms, light weapons, and small arms that contribute to and aggravate
these situations. They have made it clear that the reduction of crime and conflict is a
primary goal of the United States. They have supported U.S. Second Amendment rights
of citizens to firearms. As the experience with the OAS Convention and the U.N.
Protocol illustrates, any international treaties in this area would not bind the United States
unless these documents were acted on favorably by the U.S. Senate, if the President
decided to transmit the treaty to the Senate for its consideration.
(my bolding)

The paper you linked included the quote you lifted from it as an example of some of the crazy things people have been saying about the UN and gun control, and then goes on to prove how the paranoids are wrong.

This is a bigger source fail than you linking to world nut daily.

Do you think the NRA just randomly calls people to ask stupid questions? Oh wait, sorry. Of course you do.

The NRA generally only calls it's members. Not the general public. So unless Travis is a member, I doubt he really got the phone call.

Absolutely correct. If the NRA were performing a push poll campaign, surely there would be other reports of it, right?

(yes, I realize that last one is Daily Kos. But if Travis made it up, as you suggest, a lot of other people are also making it up too. What would Occam say?)

"This week the U.N. conference to "Prevent, combat, and eradicate the Illicit Trade in small arms and Light Weapons in All Aspects," which concludes today, puts these views in straightforward terms: Governments have the "right" to guns for "self defense and security needs." On the other hand, not one acceptable reason for individuals owning guns is mentioned.

Um, notice the word ILLICIT. Buying a gun at a gun store or gun show when the laws of your nation specifically allow you to buy said weapon, in fact your nation's constitution protects that right hardly qualifies as illicit.

And that is why I quit the NRA. I am strongly in favor of private gun ownership, but I resigned my membership when the NRA got heavily into Crackpot Conspiracy Theories.

I was a member when I was younger but quit probably 25 years ago. They used to be all about shooting safety and hunting, but they went off the rails when they became obsessed that <insert Democrat here> was going to take all our guns away.

I had a friend who was a card carrying member of both the ACLU and the NRA. He kept the cards next to one another in his wallet.

Makes sense, if you think about it.

Makes sense to me.

I'm not real concerned about the "UN" taking our guns away. Barring a repeal of the 2nd Amendment, which at the moment is the strongest it's been since the 1930's, it simply cannot happen. Unless you think the "UN" is going to invade and overthrow the United States somehow. :boggled:

Stupid poll, and I still think it's fake.

It just might beat dying in your house because you can't afford to go to the hospital. Besides any deficiencies that North Korean or Cuban healthcare might have are linked to the insane economic policies of those countries.

Quit deflecting Travis. Do you want healthcare that sucks? Yes or no? :D

The U.S. Constitution does indeed protect that right, however, there are people in positions of authority in the U.S. that would love the U.N. to monitor American firearm sales/ownership, and who believe civilian firearms should be "illicit."

McDonald v. Chicago
District of Columbia v. Heller

Proposition H: "restrict handgun possession among San Francisco residents within city limits to police and certain security professionals, and to ban the manufacture, distribution, sale and transfer of firearms and ammunition within the city."

I know I am not the friend you are referring to, but I am a member of both the NRA and the ACLU.

If you guys can quote media matters and other nut job sites(just look above, there are several),......so can I. Shoot the messenger all you want. The UN still wants to regulate you.

John Lott? You actually quoted John Lott? His data have been proven to be manufactured and he is a discredited voice in the area of gun control.

Years ago, a USENET poster named Mary RoshWP told me that John Lott really knew his stuff.
