Huckabee Attacks Natalie Portman...

Just what I was thinking! Quayle was worse, though, because Murphy Brown was a fictional character.
Beg to differ. Any fictional character, by their very nature, is a symbol. To say that a particular symbol should not be an exemplar might be misguided, but it is not wrong in principle.

Huckles, by making it about an actual specific human being, is scapegoating, and getting into "In my country, there is problem."

you may have a point...you know, now that I think about it, I can recall back during my high school days and once a year, they'd bring by a guest speaker to discuss the ills of alcohol and drug use and invariably the speaker was a recovering addict who had been clean for years.

I should've just booed him when he came to speak...I mean, who does he think he is trying to lecture us!? He's trying to tell us how he did wrong and we shouldn't do the same! Only a non-drug using person should be able to speak on that subject!!

*facepalm*

I'm sure that speaker came by and gave completely impractical advice with a proven track record of failure.

I do enjoy that you just compared having a child to drug abuse. What an odd mind you have.

Bristol wasn't just lecturing about avoiding pregnancy and safe sex, she was moralizing about abstinence. Not only is abstinence-only ridiculous Bible-based nonsense, but it fails miserably as a policy. It works 100% of the time until it doesn't work, then it fails completely.

The better example would be Ted Haggard coming to your school to explain that homosexuality is evil, which, judging by your posts, may have happened.

Or even better, it would be like an ex-druggie coming to your school to tell you how well DARE or "just say no" work. It's fascinating when people tout the very programs that failed them.

If Bristol was just telling kids how hard single parenting is and how it would have been better if she went to college first, then I doubt anyone would have a problem with the way she's using her fame--I certainly wouldn't. It's the absurd moralizing when she's the poster child for the very movement that she ignored completely. Maybe if the Palin household had explained condoms to Bristol, instead of telling her Jesus cries when she puts her legs up, she wouldn't be in the predicament that Huckabee is so worried about.

Natalie Portman is a role model and one of the few actually good looking Liberals. We should support her.

Huckabee is such a meanie !!

We should embrace single moms as the wave of the future! Who needs a husband to get pregnant anyway?

And Ann Coulter is a meanie too for showing statistics that kids raised without a father are more likely to end up in prison. She says it is 90% in inner cities. What a mean person !!

There should be reeducation camps for these Right Wingers so that they can be more understanding of the fantasy of Liberalism.

he thinks caring for the poor is part of being Christian.

I wonder where he would ever get such a ridiculous idea?

Usually the form asks the marital status, so in that context, yes, "single" is the box I check, because it is clear what they mean. But in everyday life, when I have a serious girlfriend, I don't say I'm single... well, at least not in front of her. :D

More importantly, what did she put for her Facebook status? She's not a "single mother", she's "in a relationship".

This always cracks me up:

1) Goddamn LIBURUL Holywood.
2) Liberals are ugly.

Hmm...

Just about every time you see a smoking hot chick on tv or in the movies, you're looking at an evil liberal. The difference, of course, is that hotness is not a prerequisite to run for office or be a pundit on the left.

More silliness emerging from the conservative habit of slandering liberals with whatever pops into their head at the moment.

Do you have anything showing what Bristol Palin has said as far as moralizing or being in favor of abstinence only?

Maybe if the Palin household had explained condoms to Bristol,
You don't think both Bristol and the boyfriend knew full well about condoms and their purpose.

The Google is your friend:

"Regardless of what I did personally, I just think that abstinence is the only ... 100 percent foolproof way to prevent pregnancy," she told "Good Morning America" today, backing away from a previous statement on Fox News that abstinence wasn't realistic, saying it was taken out of context.
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=7510385&page=1

Just google "Bristol Palin ab..." By the time you hit the "a" and "b," google will take you to the right place.

You don't think both Bristol and the boyfriend knew full well about condoms and their purpose.

Obviously statistics don't reveal much about individual cases, so:

1) Abstinence only programs fail.
2) Sarah Palin has been clear this is the only form of sex-ed she thinks is appropriate.
3) Abstinence only failed miserably in her household.

I'm sure Bristol and Levi knew what a condom was, but hardline abstinence folks don't like handing out condoms, don't like having them around, and certainly don't advise having one in your pocket just in case you give into temptation.

That's why it works 100% of the time until it doesn't, then it doesn't work at all.

Saying abstinence is the only foolproof way to protect against pregnancy is not advocating abstinence only programs.

That doesn't imply that other methods are wrong to be taught. The group she is a spokeperson for does not support abstinence only and where was the moralizing.

Is what she said incorrect?

But isn't she getting like 10-20 grand for each speaking gig? Seems like she has a pretty good job.

For her it's great, but because she's decided to become an advocate, she is not immune from criticism for it.

Thus, the attempted equivalency between Portman, Obama's mother, and Palin fails miserably.

Well, in the least it's obviously not foolproof. We have one fool as proof, namely the speaker.

You may be shocked to learn, but I did not copy and past every word Bristol Palin has uttered on the subject.

Recall that Bristol initially said abstinence wasn't realistic, and was then harshly corrected by her mother's machine. Now she goes around promoting abstinence-only.

You're welcome to produce Palin arguing in favor of other methods, but when people say abstinence is the ONLY 100% effective method (especially when they, themselves are evidence to the contrary), that's not an accomodating position to other forms of birth control.

She did not practice abstinence otherwise she would not be pregnant.

What do you consider to be the definition of abstinence only? I consider abstinence only to be the belief that only abstinence should be taught not other forms of birth control.

She is correct that the only 100 foolproof method of birth control is abstinence.
She did not say that the only way to teach people is to teach abstinence to the exclusion of all other methods.

I know you are smart enough to recognize the difference.

I don't believe the group she is spokeperson for does not advocate abstinence only.

This is from April 2010. One year after the supposed political machine told her to say otherwise,
http://www.newser.com/story/85444/bristol-palin-psa-cautions-against-teen-pregnancy.html

Bristol Palin urges teens to consider the consequences of a teen pregnancy in a new PSA. Produced by the Candie's Foundation, the ad shows Palin with son Tripp telling teens to "pause before you play," reports Huffington Post. It's an open-ended message that she tells ABC could mean "pause and go get a condom or it could be pause and think about your life or it could even be pause and wait until marriage."

And surely you're smart enough to realize that this goofy tautology is exactly why it's such a miserable program.

Don't have sex, you won't get pregnant! Dur, Dur. Don't jump out of a plane and you won't need a parachute! Dur, dur. Don't drive a car and you won't need a seatbelt! Dur, Dur.

It's the perfect "No true Scotsman" program: any time someone gets pregnant it's proof of their own shortcomings, not the idiocy of the ideology. Bristol was a believer in abstinence, she claims that she is re-abstinent, re-sealing herself for marriage, yet she's the embodiment of why it fails.

I don't believe the group she is spokeperson for does not advocate abstinence only.

The Candie's Foundation:

http://www.candiesfoundation.org/

I have no criticism of her work with this organization nor the PSA they made. If she really isn't advocating abstinence only, then she's using her fame for a positive end, good for her.

Her advocation of abstinence is silly, and I haven't been able to find one of the speeches she delivered, but if her message is no different from Candies, I have nothing bad to say.

Abortion is also foolproof.

So according to you, what Bristol Palin is doing depends on the belief that the cause of unwanted pregnancies is ignorance of the connection between sex and pregnancy?

If that's true, then Bristol is still an idiot.
