HPV vaccine

Here is an actual new study on the HPV quadrivalent vaccine, published by the US National Cancer Institute and carried out in Denmark, indicating that vaccination significantly reduces the rate of HPV related cervical abnormalities

Excellent news., Though I'm sure there'll be another round of nonsense from the anti-vax, religious and "Big Pharma" conspiracy nutters.

Talking of which, there is. A trilogy of programmes, to air on youtube.

I saw it being promoted by a new friend on facebook. I pointed him at this review by David Gorski, but he doesn't seem to be convinced, he quoted this ad-hom nonsense. I'm not going to push it, because he actually knows one of the girls featured and therefore has some emotional involvement, as well as being a pagan.

I understand your point, but don't see how it needs to apply to the HPV vaccine. My pediatrician never mentioned "sex" or "sexually transmitted" when explaining the vaccine. He simply said it was a vaccine that can prevent a particular cancer. He mentioned that it is best to start the course between the ages of __ and __. He gave me a more detailed disclosure to sign but there was no reason for my kid to know it was a sexually transmitted disease. Of course, I told my kid all about it and why some people don't get it on the way home from the doctor, but that is just me. Not necessary to the child getting the vaccine.

Sure. I think yours is the best policy, as I think the notion that keeping teenagers uninformed or misinformed about sex, STD's, pregnancy, etc. somehow prevents them from having sex (e.g "abstinence only") is thoroughly discredited. The primary effect seems to be reducing the probability that those who do start having sex younger than their parents might like don't take precautions.

I firmly believe that "honesty is the best policy" when it comes to teaching kids about sex, especially once they reach the age where they might actually start having sex.

Zombie thread, but a good thread. My exposure to those opposed to the HPV vaccine leads me to think that while they intersect the anti-vaxx crowd, they are often motivated by very different ideas. I'm fairly certain if we came up with a way to eliminate all STDs, they would be strongly against it. There's a strong belief out there not just that actions have consequences, but that actions having consequences is part of "God's plan". They really strongly go on about how their child is "good", and raised in an abstinence only environment, etc.

I don't see that. There would have to be some advantage for the formerly harmless to become harmful to the host.

But I could see that the formerly harmless might randomly mutate into a more harmful strain that the vaccine wouldn't work on. But taking the vaccine wouldn't have any effect on that happening.
With the pneumococcal vaccine, as they suppressed the worst pathogenic strains, other pathogenic strains became more prevalent.

This is the natural order of things and just requires the vaccine be expanded to cover more strains. With pneumococcal the vaccine now covers 23 strains. The rate of serious pneumococcal disease is significantly less.

Same with HPV virus strains, the newest vaccine covers 9. This is not something that should discourage anyone from getting vaccinated.
