horrifying attack on Jussie Smollett

The tragicomic truth is that some progressives really do feel a need to cosplay as racists and hate crime victims.
Sad but true. Victimhood is seen as social currency, where honor culture is being redefined from fighting back yourself to seeking help from the authorities. Some aspects of this redefinition could be healthy for society (like the elimination of public duels), but this case shows the extreme negative example.

What, the Babylon Bee? Or ISF?

I don't think it was an easy case at all. The mechanics of the investigation itself, maybe. But the social and political minefield... The wrong leak at the wrong time could have triggered riots. CPD basically had to make a big show of taking the initial claim very seriously, putting a lot of (unnecessary) resources on it, not giving any hint that they might not believe Smollett's story... Easy case for the detective that caught it, but an absolute nightmare for the department as a whole.

Right, but putting up the right public face should have been a simple matter. No riots triggered if you just don't say anything stupid publicly.

The only tricky part I see was associating the brothers with this. Doubt they pulled faces from street video. They had a tip, and were waiting for the brothers return from Nigeria. If I remember the timeline correctly, police raided the house when the guys were just boarding the plane home. Too late to warn them to stay in Nigeria.

I thought it seemed pretty clear that the requests for clarification were intended to obfuscate and play games.

If that were the case it'd be a pretty stupid strategy, as all TBD would have to do is make the clarification and they'd all be foiled.

No, your theory makes no sense. Refusing the clarify what you mean and then continue to use to the term, however, fits the theory far better.

In this day and age, I'm actually impressed that they were able to keep such a tight lid on leaks. All it would have taken was one disgruntled or stupid cop to say the wrong thing to a reporter, and the CPD's entire PR strategy would have been shot to hell. They could very easily have come out as the bad guys on this one.

Of all the careers, you might think an actor would be better than most at this kind of scam.

I just can't stand the amateurishness of this. You use burner phones. You pay in cash, withdrawn in increments so there is no lump correllation. Have these guys never run crimes before? Sheesh

At some point in this I was thinking who would be stupid enough to think they could account for and evade every possible camera? But it turns out he can't get on camera when he actually wanted to. Amazing.

My guess is he's going to be evading Fox's cameras successfully too. If I understand the situation correctly the second half of season 5 is due in about 3 weeks and they haven't finished filming it. It seems like it would be impossible to plan around this guy even if they still wanted him in the show for some reason. His co-workers can't be too happy with him at the moment, except maybe his understudy if he has one.

They were planning to use the clearly visible security camera present at the scene of the crime. Report the attack, show the cops the location. The cops pull the camera footage. The camera footage leaks to the press, and Robert's your mother's brother.

Only, the camera was pointing the wrong way.

I don't buy that, because if the camera was clearly visible enough to be consciously incorporated into the scheme, it was clearly visible enough to make it apparent which way it was pointed.

I think the scheme was planned to play exactly the way it did.
