horrifying attack on Jussie Smollett

If we say, for discussion purposes, that Smollett described at least one attacker as white, what does that do to the case against the black suspects?
A prosecutor might be expected to say no to the hate crime assault case.

Someone on twitter noted that the picture of the tree in the threat letter looks an awful lot like the type of palm trees they have in Nigeria.

Not saying I buy it, tho.

It doesn't look like a tree, let alone a palm tree. It looks like what it is. It is an adult trying to look like they are a 3 year old using a marker.

It isn't an adult with poor drawing skills. It is a mimic of very young childhood drawing.

Police will want to get the two brothers to testify against Smollett. They could present all the phone evidence and physical evidence they want, but if they get into court and testify that they never coordinated this with Smollett...

Oh god why doesn't he just admit it? I'm really starting to feel bad for the guy.

Feel sorry for what? That he's a that he's a scumbag who lied to police and invented a phony hate crime in an already racially charged atmosphere?

The guy should be thrown in jail if it turns out to be the case.

The entire country hears the fake story, the white-hate grows, all because of this douche bag. IF he's guilty he should serve maximum time.

By the way, CNNs story seems misleading, or is intentionally missing some very important facts. I think most people reading that story will assume that these are the guys that attacked Smollet, end of story. There is no mention of their race, for instance, and no photos (wait I thought they were s'posed to be white?).

Looking back at the envelope (even if the perp was trying to make it look childlike) the two T's look very foreign.

No, not foreign, instead it's creative artistry. Look at the second "L". It's intentionally reversed. That is all calculated to appear as if the writer is either high as a kite or is a toddler just learning to write. But in truth it's a mimic.

The cutout letters are a mimic of a 20th century ransom note. That's actually good art.

The letter appears to have artistic and creative qualities which are something of a blend of Frank Zappa, Andy Warhol and Banksy.

I also note a lack of mention of charges or info related to the hate letter.

I'd have thought the letter would be prominent in the discussion of the activities of the suspects.
Well that's going to be the FBI and we haven't heard anything from them. Maybe they will pick up the microphone next week. Or maybe these brothers didn't create the letter. Everyone is going to have stamps and a magazine in their apartment.

To be clear: Smollett came up with this and asked them to help him stage it, paid them and offered them repeated reassurances that’s they had no chance of being found out. He likely suggested and bankrolled the Nigeria trip, thinking it made them gettin found out even less likely. In reality, it made it even more suspicious.

That’s all my (correct) speculation.
Re: people super puzzled by things like the brothers leaving evidence around their apartment to be found, and Jussie super obviously deleting specifically their phone numbers from his call history, I have seen this time and time again and used to be a victim of it too.

I think one of the hardest challenges the human imagination can ever do is to be asked to imagine what it’s like to be extremely simple minded while residing in the brain of a highly intelligent person.

Those of us on a forum like this, on both sides of the political spectrum, simply have a very hard time imagining what it’s like to be dumb and lack introspection. A constant, active, complex, deep and reflective mental life is such a fundamental part of our experience of what it means to be human that we project it and assume it across the entire species. Some even project it on pets, etc.

In truth, this sort of mental framework is exceptionally unique and recent in this planet’s very long history of producing lifeforms. In fact, within the human species itself, it is almost not present at all and getting rarer.
RE: the highlighted, that's a nonsensical statement.

By the way, the search of Jussie's muscle head friends turned up a long rifle and a 12 guage shotgun.

Given that one of our heroes has a felony agg assault, I suspect they likely did not have the proper paperwork for that...

Did not turn up any MAGA hats which is weird because MAGA Country.

thought felons aren't allowed to be near firearms at all.

Anybody got any whereabouts of our alleged victim? Hiding in his lawyers office? On a plane to Ecuador?

CPD said they arrested the two Nigerians to "get more info on the crime", didn't say "assault". Crime was filing false police report? Sending threatening letter?( a crime even if it was false)

I hope Jussie didn'y give ALL his money to the PR firm, he is going to have some legal bills.

Yeah, I'd say that woman would be using sexist reasoning.

It's the sort of quiet, private discrimination that doesn't necessarily hurt anybody, but it's still technically discrimination.

I recently caught myself crossing the street every time I saw big dudes coming that I'd have to pass. I sort of asked myself why. Am I afraid they'll hurt me? Most of these encounters take place on fairly populated city streets, so that's not very reasonable. Am I afraid they'll hit on me? Maybe, but that's kind of narcissistic and presumptuous of me, isn't it? If they're not already acting weird (lurching drunkenly, hollering at other women, giving me the old eye from 10 feet away), then there's absolutely no reason to suspect a problem.

Basically, I had to admit I'd developed some habitual sexism. In the interest of practicing what I preach, I've been making a point of not crossing unless I have actual reason to suspect a problem. It also occurred to me that a lot of men probably notice when women do that (cross the street to avoid passing them). If I were a guy, that might start to get to me after awhile.

I can't say I was expecting a response like that. I was figuring that post would get totally ignored or I'd get some sort of Schrodinger's Rapist kind of thing.

I'd say it's only slightly, technically sexist as most people have a vested interest in protecting themselves from what they perceive as threats and I have no doubt that the people who lock their doors when they see a black man approaching are the same people who'd lock their doors if they saw a white-as-the-driven-snow Hell's Angel approaching.

It's kind of a weird way to try and "call someone out" for racism, almost as weird as trying to call someone out for racism by looking at what threads they post in.
