I’ve wondered a lot what kind of brain tries a stunt like this. I just can’t believe how Smollett is.

I don't know how one can mistake a white person voice for a Nigerian voice. though I guess they could have taken voice lessons in the past.

It's probably easier to direct an episode of a show, within an established system, and supported by a team of experienced professionals who know how to take care of a guest director and ensure his success.

Directing an indie gonzo low-budget crime drama filmed entirely by existing surveillance cameras is gonna be a different proposition altogether. Not everybody is cut out for that kind of work. That goes from Ocean's 11 tier to Inside Man tier.
 
A strange comment I heard, from a black guy reporting (critically) on the Smollett case. He said it's crazy to think that a white guy would watch 'Empire'... because it's a black show. Is that a thing in the US? Shows for blacks and shows for whites? It seems odd to me.

the audience is a certain demographic usually. be it age, race, etc. no reason a white person can't watch it though. just probably wouldn't appeal the them.

The Empire people should be considered to be his de facto public relations. Anything that they say should be considered untrue without independent confirmation.

It's the classic sign of a bad fiction author - they do a bit of research then try to cram everything they've learned into a specific scene, thinking that the more stereotypical elements they shoe-horn in there the more authentic the result will be.

This was specifically why I doubted it originally. It's hard to follow but I see that some of these elements have been embellished or implied by various reporting (rather than being said by Smollett directly) so I can't rely on that reasoning quite AS much.

I've been thinking about this. There's a certain amount of grooming(for lack of a better word) on Smollett's part. Young famous actor suddenly takes an interest in two schmoe extras and then one day asks them to fake a beating.

Is it actually illegal to fake a beating? The only associated criminal charge I can think of is along the lines of perverting the course of justice, but that requires proof that the brothers knew Smollett would report it to the police. Otherwise, where's the criminal intent and without intent, there can't be a charge.

I would think a case could be made that accepting (negotiating?) such a large fee then immediately absconding to Nigeria could go towards criminal intent.

Which makes me suspect that this was indeed intended to be reported to police because otherwise, why would you need 2 accomplices? If the letter turns out to be connected, that’s further evidence of a more serious scheme.

OF course, this is all contingent on there being a conspiracy between the three. It remains possible that Smollett was not part of the conspiracy and the brothers carried this out on their own or with other third parties. It would not surprise me to learn that it was an ill thought out scam to generate publicity and sympathy conceived by the manager or the brothers to “help” their struggling client/friend.

Nothing about this case makes any sense...

Probably not illegal to fake a beating - unless you know that it will be used to commit a crime. Here it would be the crime of false police report of a hate crime. Ahh, but how can you prove that they knew it would include the false police report? Well, maybe the brothers admitted that they knew in the interrogation and they signed the sheet saying that what they confessed is true.

Let's assume that Smollett is responsible for the threat letter to himself. I wonder if he opens all mail addressed to him, or if it's done by a secretary or receptionist or assistant or what. Smollett will know if he will be opening that envelope or somebody else.

This could possibly matter for charges and penalties. It's somewhat different if you get white powder on your hands knowing that it is crushed Tylenol versus a secretary who has no idea that what is on her hands is not anthrax spores.
